Beef Stew/Rinderschmortopf

Veronika's home economic topic for this weekend was how to prepare beef stew.  We do like her home economic book, but we change the recipes always to adapt them to our way of eating.  Here you see her peeling carrots.

Now I don't need to cook for tomorrow because the slow cooker will do all the work.
Jetzt brauche ich für morgen nicht mehr zu kochen, weil der "Langsamgarer" über Nacht das Essen kocht.

  1. Dear Eva,

Veronika looks like she made a delicious stew! Thanks for sharing pictures-- do you enjoy all the books in that series? I'm planning on buying a homemakers book that Catholic Heritage sells, but I'm going to consider this one as well. Blessings, B

    1. I do like the series because the books are perfect for little people. As I said before, the recipes are just mainstream American cooking, but they are easily changed. I do like the nice variety and the simpleness of the tasks. They can be done without much input from me. By the way, I have seen the CHC series, it is also for sale somewhere else in a different format (I think it comes in separate booklets). I think it looks very good, but I would use it for older children. I looked at the table of contents and thought it better for grade 7 and up maybe? When we are through with the Pearables I think I will look at the CHC one. By the way, they also have a few other homemaking books, CHC that is ("Sewing with St. Anne," etc.). Emmanuel books also used to carry something similar, but I don't know if they still do. For high school I am thinking about doing the Mennonite series from Christian Light Education. Karen Andreola wrote a good review about them. Do you know that one?

  3. We love the Sewing with Saint Anne and Tea and Cake with the Saints! I agree the bigger homemaking book looks more for middle school and up.

Are you referring to the little books from Christian Light Homemaking? If so, the cape dress and headcovering patterns look great! We enjoy making cape dresses for ourselves-- they look pretty and modest. --B

    1. Yes, that is what I meant. I think only the very last ones are for Mennonite sewing, but the earlier ones are for cooking, baking, etc. I have never sewn a dress for my girls. I did sew a cute dress for my sister when I was 19 and she was 1 :). That is a long time ago. What patterns do you use? Any of the ones you find at Jo-Ann Fabrics?

  4. Sewing for little sisters is a fun past time in our household, too!

I like the Qwik-sew patterns. (You can probably get it at Joanne's-- although I got mine from amazon) She has master patterns for baby, toddler, children, and adult. Plus, you can buy specific patterns for men or a particular outfit. She also gives great sewing lessons, ideas, and tops throughout her pattern books. She is from Sweden but studied patterns in England many years ago.

I also have ordered a couple of patterns (like the Simply Modest Cape pattern) from Candle on the Hill. They have an excellent selection of patterns for the whole family.

    Blessings, B

  5. I have seen Qwik-sew at Jo-Anne's, but I don't think I have bought any one yet. Thanks so much for all the helpful sources. I will look into them!!

  6. Perhaps this is what Chanda should make for dinner tonight! She's slacked off from her dinner duties . . ! Good cooking Veronika! It looks delicious :)
