Geography/Erdkunde

We had a party at the ballet studio yesterday and the children received a certificate and their pictures.  The pictures turned out very nicely.  Jonathan also had a baseball game -- the season is almost over.  Next week will be his last one.

Our geography studies are moving along quite well.  After reading about the physical similarities between North and South America, we studied the Gulf Stream and its effects on America.  We also read about the first people on this continent.  Van Loon talked about fishermen from Normandy who went as far as St. Pierre and Miquelon, south of Newfoundland.  Today we also covered the different mountain ranges in the east of of North America.  

Charlotte has started a new block on New York State geography and history.  Somebody in church gave us a great book which is actually a school textbook designed by National Geographic.  We've been reading about general geographical features of New York State and looked them up on a map.  Today we read about waterways and climate. 

Jonathan has stated a new novel, Tom Sawyer, and Charlotte is reading Heidi, in German of course.  Miriam has started spelling.  For grades 1 and 2 I do most spelling only orally.  We use The Natural Speller and I just have her spell the words out loud. 
We also read a great new picture book about insects: Insect Detective.

Gestern gab es eine Party beim Ballettstudio.  Die Kinder haben ihre Fotos und ein Tanzzertifikat bekommen.  Die Fotos sind gut gelungen.  Jonathan hat auch Baseball gespielt, nächste Woche ist die Saison schon vorbei. 

Unsere Erkundestudien für Nord- und Südamerika gedeihen prächtig.  Wir haben schon etwas über die physischen Ähnlichkeiten der beiden Teile und über den Golfstrom und seine Auswirkungen hier gelernt.  Im Zusammenhang mit Informationen über die ersten Menschen hier, gab es einen kleinen Abstecher zu den kanadischen Inseln St. Pierre und Miquelon, südlich von Neufundland, die früher mal von normannischen Fischern besucht worden sind. 

Charlotte hat eine neue Epoche angefangen.  Jetzt beschäftigen wir uns mit der Erdkunde und Geschichte von New York State.  Wir haben von einer Mutter in der Kirche, die ihre Kinder auch selbst unterrichtet, ein schönes Buch dafür bekommen, welches eigentlich ein Schulbuch ist.  Es ist von National Geographics gestaltet worden.  Wir haben schon einen physischen Überblick über den Staat bekommen. Heute ging es um Gewässer und Klima. 

Jonathan hat mit Tom Sawyer angefangen, Charlotte mit Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahren.  Mit Miriam und Veronika haben wir ein neues Bilderbuch über Insekten gelesen. Miriam hat auch mit englischer Rechtschreibung begonnen.  Wir benutzen dafür die Wortlisten in dem Buch Natural Speller.
