Earthquake/Erdbeben

Part of our studies this school year has been geology.  Today as a hands-on project we sat around the dinner table to experience an earthquake.  Around 1:40 p.m. the earth shook for about 30 seconds and my husband began to feel dizzy.  No one else noticed it, though.  Obviously, my husband is a very sensitive man.  The earthquake originated in Canada.  There was no big damage.

Charlotte finished her map of New York State.  I'll post a picture tomorrow.  We also started with New York State History.  Jonathan moved from Central America to South America with his geography studies.  Miriam has fallen in love with the Birds and Blooms Magazine.  She's been reading about hummingbirds.  It's amazing how fast she's moved from the alphabet to readers to magazines -- all in first grade!

I finished my homeschool year evaluation and will turn it in tomorrow.  Then the old school year is officially over and the new one begins. 

Ein Teil unserer erdkundlichen Studien ist dieses Schuljahr Geologie.  Heute haben wir uns zum Mittagessen an den Tisch gesetzt und als Projekt zum Anfassen stand ein Erdbeben auf dem Stundenplan.  Um 13.40 Uhr bebte die Erde ungefähr 30 Sekunden lang.  Meinem Mann ist es etwas schwindelig geworden, wir anderen haben es aber nicht bemerkt.  Daran erkennt man, daß mein Mann ganz besonders einfühlsam ist!  Das Erdbeben kam aus Kanada, hat aber keinen großen Schaden angerichtet. 

Charlotte hat heute ihre Karte von New York State zu Ende gezeichnet.  Morgen gibt es ein Bild davon.  Wir haben auch mit der Geschichte von New York State begonnen.  Jonathans Studien haben sich von Mittelamerika auf Südamerika verlagert.  Miriam hat sich in die Zeitschrift Birds and Blooms verliebt.  Sie liest im Moment etwas über Kolibri.  Es ist erstaunlich, wie schnell sie vom Buchstabenlernen, zu Fibeln und Lesebüchern und jetzt zu Zeitschriften gesprungen ist.  Das alles in der ersten Klasse!

Ich habe meine Bewertung unseres Schuljahres abgeschlossen und werde sie morgen abgeben.  Dann beginnt offiziell das neue Schuljahr.
