"16"

We celebrated Miriam's first birthday in London, two years ago her 14th, and today her 16th.  We went to the Museum of London to do that.  We met Peter at the museum.  Before we met, the girls and I explored St. Botolph's.

Flora is listening about how cosmetics were made in Roman London.

Two year ago, Flora cooked soup here for me.

After the museum we went to St. Paul's for evensong.

Flora drew her 16 Firmicutes.  Miriam and Charlotte are studying these in biology right now and Flora is fascinated by them: Ah, the benefits of homeschooling!

  1. Happy Birthday Miriam! I see lots of cats on cards and wrapping paper :) and I like Flora's firmicutes.

There's lots of dark wood in St. Botolph's which makes is seem warm inside. And that is very interesting about Thomas Becket's blood!

    1. Yes, Miriam picked the paper herself :). Flora is very funny I think! She worked quite hard to get 16 (I only photographed one of her sheets of paper).

St. Botolph has a rich history, but you cannot see much of the very old parts. The organ is supposed to be really good. Right now the Presbyterians are using the church. They put chairs into it and turned them sideways so that the congregation is facing the side nave of the church. That seems to be utterly strange. You sit in this quite large church, but have to stare at the wall and not towards the altar. I wonder why . . .

Jonathan wanted to know if there is any sample left of those flasks, but I don't think there is. People back then had a very different connection to blood and bones, don't you thinks so too?

    2. It does not make much sense to turn the chairs sideways, unless they wanted to fit more chairs into the area, and the chairs were used for a lecture rather than a service. It's funny.

I agree with you about the blood and bones. People in the past had a different connection with the invisible forces of the world, I think. Greg has tried to point this out to me when he's read about the early settlers and their relationship to the wildness of the forest and the native people. His family came over in 1636 and there is a record of them signing a petition at one time for the release of a neighbor who had been placed in jail due to witch accusations.

    3. I don't think it enabled them to fit more people into the church. And Presbyterian churches are not well known here. I doubt that they get a lot of people worshiping there.

That is scary about the witch accusations, but was real to many people. The remnants are still there in Halloween for example.
