Goethe Institut

Studying hard!  Every morning we devote to our school subjects.  Then there is our lunch break followed by an outing or just a walk.  We come back for tea and then we work again.  After dinner, we finish up our studies and I grade the girls' work.

On Wednesdays the "cleaner" comes and we have to be out of the house for three hours.  This Wednesday, we met Peter close to the Wallace Collection, a gallery we have been to many times.  Peter had to check the gallery guides for the students and the rest of us looked around.  Flora and I did some family trails together.

Then we left Peter and walked through Kensington Gardens to the Goethe Institut.

Into the library: What a wonderful place and wonderful staff!

We checked out books, CDs, and DVDs, all in German of course.
Wir haben Bücher, CDs und DVDs auf Deutsch ausgeliehen.

Next to the Institut was a German restaurant.

Back home, it felt good to put our feet up and read.

  1. Your routine sounds good. What time do you work in the evenings? I have been wondering about splitting up our day in some way but wonder how do you combat learning fatigue at the end of the day?

    1. We normally start at 7:30 p.m. in the evenings. I do religion and reading with Flora (she has to read one story from her reader to me). That normally only takes 15 minutes total. Then I check on what Veronika has accomplished during the day. After that, I read with Miriam for about half an hour (German and English). After that, I check on Charlotte's work. We are reading a Germany play right now and I also ask her questions about her readings for the day. Normally that takes us up to 9:00 p.m. By that time, Flora is in bed of course. Veronika has to get ready for be around 9:00 p.m. The others are free or finish unfinished work. My teens work better at night than in the mornings. I spent the rest of my evening with preparation for the next day and grading. We have learning fatigue more after lunch than in the evening. That is why an outing in the afternoon is perfect right now. Our work times are 8:15 (or 9:30 a.m.) until 10:15 a.m., followed by a snack and a 15 minute break. Work from 10:30 a.m. until about 1:00 p.m. We do Angelus at 12:00 p.m. and I start cooking then. Dinner at 1:00 p.m. We do some chores after dinner and I take a short nap (10 minutes) at about 2:00 p.m. Then we go out until about 3:30 p.m. We come back and have a snack and I have a cup of tea or coffee. At about 4:00 p.m. we start with work again. We stop at 6:00 p.m. for supper. We do the big subjects in the morning (science, math, English, history, geography). Foreign languages, art, music, health, literature, etc. are left for later in the day. I think this rhythm helps to have a good balance between chores, eating, play and learning.
