Triangles and Farming/Dreiecke und Bauernhof

This week, we started our new main lessons: Charlotte is finishing up some physical science work, Miriam is learning about revolutions, Veronika is studying geometry, and Flora has started a block on farming.  We are so happy that Pip is doing the same blocks as we are doing!  We have also been trying to coordinate a working carpooling schedule for five families for ballet, a very difficult endeavor.  Without Peter and his great mind we would have never been able to solve all this!  He is truly wonderful!  I am still working on writing out schedules for each child, but without the ballet schedule I had not been able to so far.  Now I can get to work on those, though.  I have taken a few pictures, but thought I had taken more.  I guess not.  Here is what I found on my camera:

Flora studied the harvest moon yesterday and how important it was for early farming in this country.  And yesterday happened to be Harvest Moon Day!

We watched the rising harvest moon.
Wir haben den aufgehenden Erntemond beobachtet.

Flora has started a moon observation project.
Flora hat mit einem Mondbeobachtungsprojekt angefangen.

Veronika is learning about the 3-4-5 triangle of Ancient Egypt.

She knotted this triangle using cubits as measurement.

And here are her free-hand geometrical shapes.

Tomorrow, I will register Miriam for art classes.  She will take classes with the same teacher Jonathan had.  Speaking of Jonathan: He applied for a job with a college newspaper and got the job!  That will pay for his gas.

  2. I love Flora's farming page :-). You were really blessed to see the moon. The weather here has been awful and we have so far not seen the moon :-(. Thanks for all the links we used some of the Grade Four resources as part of our work this morning. Veronika did a great job using string to make her triangle ( is it an isosceles triangle?) and I love the colourful free hand geometric shapes. So glad to read that Peter managed to sort the car pooling conundrum. I had no idea that it involved five families, give that man a gold star!! I have left comments on J's Instagram posts sounds like he is settling in nicely. Love and hugs San and all xx

    1. Thanks for your friendly words. We saw only the moon rise and then it disappeared behind clouds. I do have some German resources I am using for this first farming block, but they would no be useful for you :). Today, Flora drew a farmer sowing his seed and we also read about threshing, winnowing, and the gristmill. We hope to visit a gristmill later this month.

Veronika's triangle is a right triangle. We did draw isosceles ones today.

I think there are ten girls from five families and they do not live in our town. Each family lives in a different town and the ballet studio is 40 minutes away from us. And of course, those girls are not in the same classes, at least not all at the same time. I still don't know how he did this. I was ready to give up after I had compiled all the information. But I guess my notes helped Peter to come up with a plan. I only have to drive on Tuesdays :).

I think Jonathan is getting to know more people. He has an honors dinner tonight and wants to join campus ministry. He will be also part of a great books reading program. He tried a local ballet school, but did not like it much. He does have classes at the university (Seton Hill), but wanted some more. Now he is not sure what to do. He has also taken a walk in the nature preserve. That is where he took his instagram picture. You get a nice view of the basilica from there.

I have to go and meet a student now and then register Miriam at the art teacher's house for classes. Unfortunately, it just started to rain and Peter has the car to do the grocery shopping. I guess we will get quite wet.

  3. Hooray for Peter and congrats to Jonathan. The moon pictures are very pretty :)

How nice that you and San have coordinated lessons a bit!!

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, I think it is also good for Pip and Flora to see that they are not the only ones working on certain topics.
