The Straight and the Curved Line/Die gerade und die krumme Linie

For the fifth time I have started teaching formdrawing!  Today, after listening to the first story in Margaret Peckham's little book Fairy Tales about a prince who can neither do math nor read nor write, Flora got to know the straight and the curved line, the two basic forms for learning to write.  She was very excited to get started.

Veronika is studying the Old Testament.  Here is her picture of Jacob's dream.
Veronika liest mit mir das Alte Testament.  Hier ist ihr Bild von Jakobs Traum.

Miriam is doing a unit in astronomy/geography.  We studied longitude and latitude.  Part of her lesson was to find out the places that were hidden behind the numbers below.

Jonathan was mowing the lawn for our neighbor.  The neighbor came back from Nairobi today and told us all about the great animals he had seen: monkeys, pelicans. giraffes, hippos, etc.  Quite exciting!  It made a big impression on Flora.  Jonathan also took a biology quiz on cells.  And he started to study for his written test to get a junior driver learner's permit.

Charlotte played ball with Flora, but I have not gotten a report on what she studied today.  I saw her studying, but I have to ask her what it was, I guess.  I know she is working on a research paper on Junipero Serra :).

Peter and I had our German wedding anniversary today: 19 years ago we were married in the Catholic church in my hometown in Germany.  I am still writing letters with the priest that married us.  He is retired, but has kept in contact.

The basketball hoop is really popular these days.  I bought a new net and now Veronika and Miriam especially play a lot.

For myself, I found a pretty potted sunflower!  I love sunflowers!

The sun is setting and it is time for children to come back on in.  Wishing everybody a wonderful evening.

  1. Alles Gute zum deutschen Hochzeitstag!
Super was ihr alles lernt!

Da muß man hier mehrere Jahre davor anfangen.

  2. I guess you will be able to teach firm drawing with your eyes closed! it is funny I thought you might have waited to teach grade one after the summer or are you working through the holidays this year?

We currently have grey and rain which is a pain, it does not feeling summer at the moment.

Just about to tackle the ironing! Hope you have a good evening xx

    1. You know, I "know" the forms, but my drawing is not getting any better. Must be old age :). I wanted to wait until September, but Flora needed some more entertainment, so I thought I might as well start with formdrawing. We are working through the summer. We had too many interruptions this year that were worthwhile interruptions, but especially the high schoolers have still a lot of work that needs to be finished. There will be summer camps and other activities as well, though.

We had weather like that for several weeks, not it is hot and muggy, not ideal either. I also have a pile of ironing to do, but it is too hot. I just came back from the post office and that walk was really too much in the humidity.

      Take care,
      Eva

    1. Thanks so much, Barbara! When is your wedding date? How many years have you been married? I guess many weddings are in summer, although my parents married in November. Blessings on you and Patrick as well.

  4. The heat and humidity can be so dreadful. Thankfully, tonight is nice for us, and the past two days weren't as bad as the beginning of the week. I really don't like having the air conditioning on, but I do feel thankful it's there when needed.

Your day sounded so wonderfully full and productive! Doesn't that feel good? I love lesson days . . I haven't had many lately with Chanda as she is so busy with a dance intensive and I've also been listening to Morgana's stories of Austria, which has been so nice. But (but!!) Chanda does need to do catch up with Maths and Literature . . and I will be doing a late CAT test for her in September. Ah well . . It's nice that your oldest can now work on their own while you work with the younger ones . . though I do know questions must be asked to make sure things get done! A report on Junipero Serra sounds like fun, especially after such wonderful adventures in CA :)

Congratulations on your anniversary! And the sunflower is beautiful, as is your sunset picture. Happy Summer Eva :) xoxo

    1. So good that your temperature has dropped. It goes back and forth here, but not too bad. I also do not like the air-conditioning, but we don't have any here, so no temptation.

Yes, those main lessons give you a very satisfactory feeling all around. How did you manage to convince the school to do the CAT test so late? That is the new school year after all . . . The two high schoolers still need plenty of supervision and help, but I do that at night. There is no time during the day. Yes, she had to write a report on a historical figure or a saint, so Serra is perfect for that, especially after we have seen so many of his items and churches, just his grave we did not see. We are watching an interesting DVD on his life right now..

Happy Summer to you as well and thanks for the anniversary wishes.
