Today it really snowed! Everybody had a great time outside.
Jonathan and I read the snow poem Velvet Shoes, which was the perfect literary passage for the day! Charlotte briefly studied the stone age in The Old World's Gifts to the New
and Stone Age People
before moving on to our block of Ancient India. We've also been reading the magical book Sacred Places
, which has lovely poems about twelve ancient holy and magic places in the world. The Boy with the Bronze Axe
adds a literary component to this part of ancient history. Miriam is still adding and subtracting. We've moved on to bigger numbers. She also started practicing jump rope every morning -- she hasn't been able to learn it during the warmer months outdoors. 
Veronika shucked an ear of dried Indian corn. We want to make a necklace out of it.
Advent devotions/Adventsandacht
Heute hat es wirklich geschneit. Alle hatten viel Spaß im Schnee. Veronika und Flora haben natürlich auch viel Schnee gegessen. Jonathan und ich haben das Gedicht Velvet Shoes gelesen, was wunderbar den Schnee beschreibt und heute gerade die richtige Literaturpassage war. Charlotte hat sich kurz mit der Steinzeit beschäftigt. Englische Buchvorschläge dazu befinden sich oben. Wir lesen auch ein Buch
mit Gedichten zu zwölf alten Heilgtümern der Welt. Diese Themen sollen uns auf unsere nächste Hauptepoche über das alte Indien einstimmen. Miriam übt fleißig addieren und subtrahieren mit größeren Zahlen. Jeden Morgen holt sie auch ein Springseil hervor und springt ein wenig, weil sie damit immer noch Schwierigkeiten hat. Veronika hat die Maiskörner von einem getrockneten Maiskolben gelöst. Wir wollen die Körner über Nacht einweichen und eine Kette daraus machen.

ReplyDeletei love the books you are reading (especially, sacred places and the boy with the bronze axe . . ). today we read: seven wonders of the ancient world by lynn curlee, women in ancient egypt by fiona macdonald, and the library of alexandria by kelly trumble (which was fascinating and tied in nicely with the your post that i had read about eratosthenes . . i'll have to get that book out from the library also!).
i enjoyed your pictures of everyone in the snow. it looked like a fun time!

ReplyDeleteOur Stalker has found the new blog which is very disturbing. I think they found us by using google images, for when I looked there was a picture of Benedict and behind the image any postings I make to web pages or forums.
I had know idea that this could happen and Dave only after the fact realised we could've turned off search engine crawls via the settings mode.
I might have to password the blog and if I do I will let you know.

Ja, jetzt hat es bei euch richtig geschneit. Bleibt der Schnee nun den ganzen Winter über? Bei uns haben sie für Montag leider schon milderes Wetter und Schneeschmelze vorausgesagt. Schade!
ReplyDeleteSeilspringen ist eine gute Idee! Muss das auch mal wieder hervorkramen. Unsere Kinder lieben zur Zeit auch das Hoola Hoop und die Stelzen (so kleine Stelzen, die auch drinnen passen).
Hello Dorina, maybe the new snow that is hitting Buffalo today (all major highways were shut down) will reach you soon. It's supposed to move south, but hasn't reached us so far. I think the amount we got is just perfect. The children can play, but you can still drive.

Oh, San, it must be so great to have a real fire in the house. When we go to the Amish country store, the children can see a real oven, because that's the way the store is heated. We also have a gas stove and so there is some fire. I remember the first time we went to Germany with Jonathan and Charlotte and they saw my parents' electrical stove. They were very perplexed. They thought you couldn't cook with it because there was no fire! It's so good for children to see where warmth can come from.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about the stalking problems. Are there any legal steps you could take? I discovered the other day the same thing, that your pictures can end up on google images. I was kind of shocked, but that's the internet world I suppose. I think you can try to protect your images in various ways, but nothing is foolproof. Good luck to you with this problem.

ReplyDeleteWahrscheinlich bleibt der Schnee jetzt erstmal. Diese Gegend hier ist "berühmt" für viel Schnee und lang anhaltenden Schnee, manchmal bis Mai. Viele alte Leute gehen im Winter nach Florida.
Stelzen sind bestimmt auch prima. Die haben wir leider nicht.
Eva, wegen "die Gegend ist berühmt für viel Schnee", da wo ihr lebt, das gehört zum sog. Snow Belt, oder? (habe ich letztes Jahr mit John gelernt)
ReplyDeleteWir leben sozusagen auf der Grenze zwischen Schnee aus dem Norden (snow belt) und Schnee aus dem Süden. Manchmal hat unser Nachbardorf Massen von Schnee und wir kaum etwas. Peter war einmal eine Stunde entfernt zum Einkauf und konnte nicht zurückfahren, weil es dort so viel geschneit hatte (wir hatten hier gar nichts). Er mußte mit allen Lebensmittel in einem Hotel übernachten! Oft haben die Kinder aber auch hier schneefrei (oder der Strom fällt aus, was in Amerika sehr häufig ist).
