The Tortoise and the Hare/Die Schildkröte und der Hase

Yesterday was Johnny Appleseed's birthday.  We started reading Johnny Appleseed: The Story of a Legend.  

Miriam started a block on fables.  We're using Milo Winter's Aesop's Fables for this.  Today we read "The Tortoise and the Hare."  Before reading the fable to Miriam, we talked about both animals, where they live, what they eat, what they look like, how they move, etc.  I have a very nice German children's encyclopedia, named Löwenzahn Kinder Lexikon.  It is very helpful for finding information that is accurate but not overly detailed.  After hearing the story, Miriam acted it out by using a playsilk and two wooden animals.  We did not have a fox (the referee), so we left him out of our play.  

Charlotte and I started learning about mushrooms.  We read about the different kinds of mushrooms and their place in the plant world.  In addition to Live Education!'s Botany, we're reading in Lesebuch der Pflanzenkunde (The Living World of Plants: A Book for Children and Students of Nature) and also in an Amish/Mennonite science book called God's Marvelous World, which is definitely Christian, but provides just the right level of information and also offers a few experiments.  Charlotte also finished her drawing of a tree and photosynthesis.  

Jonathan finished his picture of Tullus Hostilius and his sister begging him not to fight against the Curatii.  We continued our line of kings with Ancus Martius (or Marcius) and Lucius Tarquinius Priscus.  Jonathan especially liked the story when an eagle stole Tarquinius' cap and later replaced it.    

Gestern war der Geburtstag von Johnny Appleseed.  Deshalb haben wir mit einem Bilderbuch über sein Leben angefangen. 

Heute waren dann für Miriam Fabeln dran.  Wir benutzen dafür eine Fabelausgabe von Milo Winter. Bevor wir unsere erste Fabel "Die Schildkröte und der Hase" gelesen haben, haben wir über die beiden Tiere geredet, was sie fressen, wo sie leben, wie sie sich verhalten, wie sie sich bewegen, usw.  Dafür kann man gut das Kinderlexikon von Peter Lustig benutzen.  Es liefert für dieses Altersstufe gerade die richtigen Informationen.  Nachdem ich dann die Fabel vorgelesen hatte, hat Miriam sie mit einem Seidentuch und zwei Holzfiguren nachgepielt.  Leider haben wir keinen Fuchs (den Schiedsrichter) und haben ihn deshalb weggelassen. 

Charlotte hat heute eine Lektion über Pilze angefangen.  Neben unserer Information in Live Education! lesen wir immer im Lesebuch der Pflanzenkunde.  Für die Pilze haben wir uns auch ein christliches (Mennoniten/Amische) Naturkundebuch genommen, welches viele naturkindliche Themen für Fünftklässler und Sechstklässler anschaulich und verständlich beschreibt, auch wenn es ein älteres Buch ist.  Es gibt sogar einige machbare Experimente darin.  Charlotte hat auch ihren Baum zur Photosynthese fertiggemalt. 

Jonathans Bild von Tullus Hostillius und seiner Schwester ist fertig geworden.  Ancus Martius und Lucius Tarquinius Priscus standen heute auf dem Programm.  Jonathan mochte besonders gerne die Geschichte, als ein Adler Tarquinius' Hut stahl und ihn später zurückbrachte.
