Alpacas

We had two little ballerinas today:  Veronika had her very first lesson, Miriam started her third year.  Both had a very good time, Veronika even knew one little girl in her class.  Flora wanted to go along also.  She put on some old ballet shoes from Jonathan and was all set.  Too bad they don't accept toddlers in diapers. 

Today was our art history/health/art/field trip day.  For art history, Jonathan started  Henrik van Loon's The Arts.  Charlotte read in Stories Pictures Tell (Book Five), and Miriam in Art Stories Book 2.  Health is a mandatory subject here in New York State and we try to choose books that are not too graphic.  Miriam read in My Second Health Book (The Road to Health, Grade 2), Jonathan and Charlotte are reading the health sections in a reprinted old Catholic science textbook.  Charlotte is reading in Science and Living in God's World - Book 5, and Jonathan in Science and Living in God's World - Book 7.

For art, the children worked in Artistic Pursuits Book 1 (K-Grade 3) and Artistic Pursuits Book 1 (Grade 4-6).  Miriam and Veronika had to imitate cave art, Jonathan and Charlotte had to draw outside and focus on texture.

For our field trip we took advantage of "Visit the Farm Day" in our area.  We went to an alpaca farm and watched 28 alpacas, two were very close and could be petted.  We also got to see a brand new baby alpaca who had just been born an hour and a half earlier.  The mother was very protective, we could hardly get a look at the baby, which was nursing contentedly.  That was very special, but you couldn't take pictures of the new baby.  Here are pictures of the two alpacas that were very close, though. 

For our art history read-aloud, we looked at the first picture in How to Talk to Children about Art.  This book is originally French and goes through the story of art by looking at one painting at a time.  Each painting is accompanied by questions/statements and answers that get progressively more complicated.  There are three different levels of questions and answers, marked by colors at the edge of the pages.  Here is a sample:

Heute haben wir zwei kleine Primaballerinas gehabt.  Miriam hat mit ihrem dritten Jahr Unterricht begonnen, Veronika hatte ihre erste Stunde.  Beide waren ganz glücklich, es gab viele alte Gesichter wiederzusehen, Veronika kannte sogar ein kleines Mädchen aus ihrer Klasse.  Flora wollte zu gerne auch mitgehen.  Sie hatte sich alte Ballettschuhe von Jonathan angezogen.  Schade, daß sie Kleinkinder in Windeln im Ballettstudio nicht wollen. 

Heute war unser Kunstgeschichts-/Gesundheits-/Kunst- und Ausflugstag.  Die Bücher, die wir dafür benutzen, gibt es nicht auf Deutsch, wer sich dafür interessiert, kann oben auf den englischen Titeln klicken.  Für Kunst mußten Miriam und Veronika Höhlenmalerei nachahmen.  Jonathan und Charlotte mußten draußen Dinge in der Natur beobachten und dabei auf die Oberlflächen-beschaffenheit besonders achten. 

Als Ausflug haben wir heute den "Visit the Farm Day" zum Anlaß genommen, einen Alpacabauernhof zu besuchen.  Es gab 28 Alpacas zu sehen, zwei waren ganz nah und man konnte sie streicheln.  Wir haben sogar ein Alpacalamm gesehen, welches erst einige Stunden alt war.  Die Mutter ließ keinen zu nahe treten und so konnten wir nur ein bißchen sehen, wie das Kleine bei seiner Mutter trank.  Das war eine besondere Überraschung.  Fotos konnte man dort leider nicht machen, da es die Mutter zu sehr erregte. 

Unser Abenvorlesebuch war ein wunderschönes Kunstgeschichtsbuch: How to Talk to Children about Art.  Es kommt ursprünglich aus dem Französischen und bietet einen "Rundgang" durch die Kunstgeschichte anhand von ausgewählten Gemälden.  Jedes Gemälde wird für verschiedene Altersstufen erklärt und beschrieben.  Es wird immer eine Frage gestellt oder ein kurzer Satz vorgestellt, worauf dann eine Erklärung folgt. Die verschiedenen Altersstufen sind mit Farben am Seitenrand gekennzeichnet.  Oben sind zwei Seiten des Buches.
