Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

For Memorial Day, we read Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (paid link).  Here is the description from Amazon:

Keeping vigil at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Arlington National Cemetery, are the sentinel guards, whose every step, every turn, honors and remembers America’s fallen. They protect fellow soldiers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, making sure they are never alone. To stand there—with absolute precision, in every type of weather, at every moment of the day, one in a line uninterrupted since midnight July 2, 1937—is the ultimate privilege and the most difficult post to earn in the army. Everything these men and women do is in service to the Unknowns. Their standard is perfection.

Exactly how the unnamed men came to be entombed at Arlington, and exactly how their fellow soldiers have come to keep vigil over them, is a sobering and powerful tale, told by Jeff Gottesfeld and luminously illustrated by Matt Tavares—a tale that honors the soldiers who honor the fallen.

Heute wird hier "Memorial Day" gefeiert.  Man gedenkt der amerikanischen Gefallenen aller Kriege.

We have had some unfortunate events happening: our minivan had a flat tire, our lawn mower broke (a wheel broke off), and upon Charlotte's return to Denver yesterday, she discovered that her car had been stolen!  The police is looking for it.  I came down with a flu/cold last Tuesday.  I have felt quite bad for a week, but it seems to be getting better.  And Veronika called today from the beach to show me the wonderful waves.  That made me very happy!

I guess that is it for today.

Ich glaube, das ist für heute alles.

  2. Sending hugs to you Eva and I hope you continue to improve from this virus.
We’ve also had car issues as a trailer smashed into our car on the motorway last week ( no one hurt) so we have been given a courtesy car until ours is fixed. Sadly it doesn’t have hand controls so I’m back to being sole driver and we have to travel on my birthday for a medical assessment so I finally road tested the loan car today. I will be driving to Warwick so it’s just under a three hour drive and I would appreciate your prayers as I’ve had a wobble in my health.
What a nasty shock for Charlotte and very inconveniencing I don’t doubt. Is she still able to get to her jobs via public transport or walking?
    Thinking of you
    San xx

    1. Ah, thanks so much. Today I was feeling better than the past days, but Flora is feeling pretty bad, and she has her ballet performance coming up next week. Peter also got it, but Miriam has not. Oh, how awful to have somebody run into you! I am glad that nobody got hurt. I hope your car gets fixed soon. I hope the drive to Warwick will be a smooth one and I will pray for you. Maybe after your assessment you can have a treat there to celebrate your birthday?
Yes, Charlotte arrived around midnight at the airport, and then her car was simply not there! You cannot live without a car in this country. She had to get a rental car. Her company is on summer break, but she is still teaching. She did find her car; the thieves had left it near the airport. Now it is in the shop waiting to be repaired. The repairs will be very costly.

  3. I’m really sorry to read that the thieves damaged Charlotte’s car and that both Flora and Peter are now unwell. Sadly we had another car incident on Saturday but if it had happened whilst Ben was driving on the motorway the day before he would have been killed.

Two months ago he needed two tyres replacing on his car and unbeknown to him the tyres had not been bolted in place correctly. When he was driving through the village on Saturday teatime he heard this loud knocking sound and a few minutes later his steering became problematic and as he was trying to pull over the wheel flew off! It was all caught on his dash cam and loads of people came to help, including a chap who put on the spare wheel but the front panels of his car have been ripped off and the passenger door is also damaged. His Guardian Angel definitely protected him on Friday 💕
Thanks for your prayers for today’s trip xx

  4. Today, Flora was feeling better, just Peter is coughing a lot still. That story about the wheels is awful! I think the car garage should pay for the damage. How irresponsible of them!

How did your trip go? Did you get to celebrate your birthday? And: Happy birthday to you! There is a present making its way to you. I hope it will put a smile on your face. Love to you!
