Our three wise men have come and are now on their journeys back home.  We are reading about their story in Es zogen drei Könige.  Unsere drei heiligen König sind gekommen und wieder auf der Rückreise.  Wir lesen ihre Geschichte in Es zogen drei Könige.




Charlotte got a pleasant surprise today.  She really wanted a dog for Christmas, but we already have a cat, so a dog will not really join our family anytime soon.  My dear brother must have felt sorry for Charlotte because he sent her a gorgeous puppy calendar.  There were many ohs and ahs from all the girls :).

Charlotte ist heute angenehm überrascht worden.  Sie hatte sich sehnlichst einen Hund zu Weihnachten gewünscht, doch da wir schon eine Katze haben, wird ein Hund nicht so schnell ein Teil unserer Familie werden.  Mein lieber Bruder hat wohl Mitleid mit Charlotte gehabt und ihr einen wunderschönen Hundekinderkalender geschickt.  Es gab viele Bewunderungsausrufe hier bei allen Mädchen im Haus :).  

Flora has discovered that she can find Daddy always ready for a game of Swipe.  She loves to beat him.

Flora hat herausgefunden, daß Papa gerne mit ihr Swipe spielt.  Am liebsten schlägt sie ihn natürlich.

We don't just sit around and play all day -- although it sometimes looks like it --, no, we actually do study quite a bit.  Here Jonathan and Charlotte are studying for their fifth Latin test.  I do have to admit that even the studying seems to be fun, though.

Wir sitzen hier nicht nur herum und spielen den ganzen Tag, auch wenn es manchmal so aussieht.  Nein, wir arbeiten eigentlich ganz schön viel.  Hier üben Jonathan und Charlotte für ihren fünften Lateintest.  Ich muß jedoch zugeben, daß auch das Üben nach Spaß aussieht.  

I was looking forward to Hugh Benson's book "A Child's Rule of Life," which I had reserved through ILL.  When I opened the book, I read

Sir:
     I have to report to the Department that on the night of the 19th instant twelve rebels, headed by a man named Goldsmith landed in a small boat at Blackistone's Island, and destroyed the lens and lamp, and carried off fifteen gallons of oil belonging to the lighthouse at that point without doing further injury. . .

Well, that did not sound like the book I was expecting!  I flipped to the title page that read The Jesuit Missions of St. Mary's County Maryland.  I guess somebody at the Library of Congress grabbed the wrong book to send here!  Too bad, although this one is actually quite interesting :).

Heute habe ich auch ein Bibliotheksbuch mit Fernleihe bekommen.  Ich habe eigentlich ein altes religiöses Kinderbuch erwartet.  Als ich das Buch jedoch aufschlug, las ich etwas über einen Überfall auf einen Leuchtturm in Maryland!  Das klang wahrhaftig nicht wie ein Kinderbuch!  Ein kurzer Blick auf das Titelblatt bestätigte mir dann, daß dieses Buch über die jesuitischen Missionen in Maryland berichtete, nicht wirklich, was ich lesen wollte, obwohl es sich eigentlich als recht interessant herausgestellt hat.  Da hat wohl jemand bei der Kongreßbibliothek in Washington einen Fehler gemacht.  Hoffentlich kann ich das richtige Buch noch bekommen.
