Almost Christmas/Fast Weihnachten

We finally bought our Christmas tree. Peter was parked next to:
Endlich haben wir auch einen Weihnachtsbaum. Peter hat neben diesem hier geparkt:

We are wrapping presents right now (birthday and Christmas):
Wir packen Weihnachtsgeschenke und Geburtstagsgeschenke ein:

I had a busy day today (I guess I always have busy days). First we went onto campus to meet the father of Miriam's friend. He was giving a final, but Miriam wanted to give him a present for her friend J. They are leaving for Wisconsin and Minnesota today, trying to beat the winter storm that's coming in our direction.

Then we tried to get a new altar server vestment for Jonathan. We drove all the way to our old church, but it turned out that our key doesn't work anymore. Peter has a church key from his organ playing days. So we had to drive back home and continue on to the campus bookstore. We still wanted to get certain things before it closed for the holidays. Luckily, I met a student there, who is the son of a friend, who has a key to the church. He told his mom about our problem and later in the evening Jonathan and I had a chance to go back to the church and exchange his current robe for a larger one.

I didn't just meet the student, but also a friend (the daughter of the lady for whom Charlotte cleans), who wants to come by to bring some clothes for Charlotte (her two daughters are all grown up). Then there was one of Peter's colleagues, an art professor, who asked me if Peter would get on my nerves next semester because he is on sabbatical. I assured him that Peter would probably work on campus, but keep his door closed. One of the ladies working in the bookstore is also a friend of ours and we had a chat about Christmas traditions. By the time we got out of that store it was almost lunch time.  Peter also showed up after giving his last oral exam and we all went home together.

Now we are sitting in the midst of presents that still need to go to the post office tomorrow. After that we have to bake at least a few cookies. We would also like to go to confession before Christmas, but we don't know if Father will make it to our church because it's snowing pretty hard right now. We'll see. This Advent was too short for all the preparations, but Jonathan told me it always seems to be too short, even when we get four full weeks of Advent. Maybe he's right. Oh well, we'll do the best we can.

  3. As I write at 22:50 Dave is sawing the bottom off the tree, I've just finished icing Pip's birthday cake for tomorrow and I've yet to clean up the tree mess in the conservatory and set the birthday table for breakfast! At least all the presents are wrapped ... I think!

Our best treat was a visit from our dear priest friend yesterday who is also Benedict's God-Father, he gladly heard confession for Dave and I, hooray!! I'm still helping Benedict with his first confession prep and I'm praying that he'll make his first confession in the New Year with Holy Communion to follow soon after.

Hope the snow doesn't cause to many problems. Thinking of you.

    1. So much to do! Wishing Pip a wonderful birthday tomorrow! Our tree is still outside. I guess we'll bring it in tomorrow. Peter will also have to do same sawing . . . There is a lot of snow outside, almost 1 foot fell overnight.

We will still have to mail out our Christmas letter, it's not quite finished yet (the English version is almost finished, but it still needs to be translated into German). There are also some presents we need to mail on Monday. The new customs forms make everything very complicated.

Father was able to come to church today, inspite of the snow. So Jonathan, Charlotte, Miriam, and I went to confession. What a treat that you could have confession at home! We all felt so happy after confession, now our hearts are ready for Christmas, even when our house still needs some major work to be ready. Please let me know the date, once you know it, for Benedict's confession and Holy Communion. I want to send him a little something for this special time!

Love from across the ocean to all of you.

  4. Liebe Eva,
