Maple Sugaring Season/Ahornsirupsaison

Last year we missed our annual maple sugaring events because we were in London.  So we were very excited to find out that there was going to be a homeschool class on maple sugaring at Letchworth Park today.

 Boiling sap
Kochen des Ahornsaftes

Here we are learning how the Senecas made maple syrup: They filled a wooden trencher with the sap and added hot stones from the fire.  That made the water evaporate, but it was a very long process.

 Adding the hot stones

You can see the steam rising from the sap.

 Grade testing
Ahornsirupgrad wird gemessen

On the left is the syrup that needs grading.  You determine the grade by comparing it to the other bottles.

 Testing the new syrup
Der neue Sirup wird getestet.

Warming up at the college café.  (Jonathan was e-mailing Peter to see if he could join us, but he was teaching at that time.)

  1. What a lovely and fun day! Flora's hat is very pretty . . did someone make it?

I love seeing the hot stones being added to the trencher . . the syrup must have been very precious to them.

    1. It was a fun day, but soooo cold! Yes, Jonathan made this hat for himself, but it is too small for him now. I thought the hot stone idea was very interesting and time consuming. It must have been a very special treat for them. I wonder how they came up with this idea.
