We Are Still Here/Wir sind noch da!

Helping Flora with learning to ride a bike
Jonathan hilft Fora beim Fahrradfahrenlernen.

These have been the busiest first two weeks of a semester ever.  I know now that I do not like Chromebook!  I think pretty soon I will be an expert for installing software.  My best advice: Don't go to college with Chromebook!  It will not get you anywhere.  And don't think you can get by by just using your phone.  You do need a computer!  Today, for the first time, I thought I was actually teaching German and not giving advice on computer related matters.  I think we have also straightened out almost all my students' schedules.  In case the computer idea does not work out, maybe admissions will hire me to give advice on how to add or drop a course :).

Jonathan has been doing quite well with his chemistry class so far.  Today was his first real lab day.  They measured the density of iron for almost three hours!  He is not allowed to wear contact lenses during the labs.  He needs glasses and safety glasses (and my laptop!).  He talked in French (!) to our retired French professor today about his experiences in this chemistry class.  The professor was very impressed that he was taking this class because it has the reputation of being a hard class.  Charlotte is enjoying her music course although the professor kind of shortens his teaching time.  Today was also the first day of flute for her.  She has a new teacher because her old teacher graduated.  I think she is doing well with the new teacher.  We have not started any other homeschooling.  It is simply way too hot!  We will start on Monday, though.  I am working on our family schedule.  That is a rather difficult task because of the fact that we will have to drive to ballet now.  Our ballet teacher moved to a different village.  Only Flora will still take classes here because her teacher is teaching at our old studio.  But Flora will also audition for the Nutcracker and that is with the other teacher farther away.  Jonathan has been practicing his night driving to get the hours he needs to take his driving test.  He is also practicing parallel parking.

I will upload the Draken pictures tomorrow or on Sunday.  Today I want to finish our schedule.

  1. We were up in NYC this past week, and it was hot! Crazy to have a heat advisory in September. I don't blame you waiting to begin school. Hopefully, we will see autumn weather soon.

    1. Yes, this is so unusual! Right now we are having torrential rains with potential flooding. That is also not so nice. At least, the heat has left us. I hope you had a good time in NYC, though.

  3. Happy Saturday, Eva. It's nice to hear about Charlotte and Jonathan's classes. It sounds very good for them :)

Computers and computer programs are supposed to make our live's easier but sometimes it doesn't feel that way! Congrats on your new talents! I've noticed the computer takeover in the hospital with my parents and with my doctor at the clinic we go to. Everything is entered online. I think only my dentist still has paper files.

Yes, it has been too hot! Here's hoping the weather will be cooler by Monday . .

    1. I think they are gaining valuable insights and are also learning a lot. They take them very serious and want to do well. Both courses are not easy. Charlotte had her first test the other day and had to identify music passages that the professor played. They had to recognize the piece and composer. Not so easy!

Thanks for your congratulations! Yes, most doctors use computers now too. I think that is really annoying. You seem to be talking to a screen and not a person anymore.

We are having a huge storm right now. Hopefully the power will not go out.

  5. Too hot for you guys and we keep switching between summer and autumn temperatures on an almost daily basis!! I had been wondering how you were doing and do not envy your college hassles or the upcoming ballet schedule. I am sure you will find a good way of home schooling in the car or using the car time to grade papers for your German students. Am I right in thinking that J still needs a qualified driver to sit in the car with him when he is out and about? Hope you enjoy your weekend despite the crazy heat X

    1. I saw that is was humid at your place, very strange. I thing the weather has gone crazy. Well, in the car homeschooling is not possible because five girls (four are teens) plus one young man do not want to study in the car :). Yes, Jonathan has not gotten his license yet. He needs four more hours of night driving. Then he can take the final driving test. If he passes that one he has his adult license.
