We lit our tree in the evening to celebrate.
And, of course we read our favorite two picture books Song of the Camels and Amahl and the Night Visitors. We also started the German book Es zogen drei Könige, another "must."
The rest of the day was kind of crazy. First Jonathan "lost" his left contact lens. He has no real idea where it went. So Peter had to drive all the way up north and get a new one! Then the sink in the bathroom was leaking (well, at least that's what we thought). So Peter called the plumber, who came right during lunch time when I was cooking. He told us we had to replace the faucet and he also helped with a light fixture in the other bathroom. He said when we had bought the faucet, he would install it. So I spent some time researching faucets, called Peter, and told him he had to buy a faucet while he was out shopping for a left contact lens (he got that lens for free). He bought a faucet, light bulbs for the other bathroom, and a door knob for our front door (which is so bad that we can hardly enter or exit the house that way). On top of all that, Veronika, Jonathan, and Miriam are still sick. Charlotte took Flora to her ballet class. There were only four children there, including Flora. I guess we are not the only people that have sick children.
There was still another event to celebrate, but that was very low key today: Jonathan turned 18. No cake, no special meal, no presents today (well, my sister had sent a present, and Flora had bought him something, but we did not officially do presents today). First, everybody has to get better again and Peter has to come back from Florida (he is leaving shortly). But I will leave you with this picture because we got out Jonathan's baby pictures:

Gah, you are having a crazy time of it :-(. Johnathan 18? I bet you are thinking where did the time go? Happy Birthday to you both hope you manage to celebrate when you are feeling better xx
ReplyDeleteYes, why do all these things always happen at once?
DeleteYes, where did the time go? He was such a cute and tiny baby (5 lbs 8 oz). He never slept (and still does not). He was always curious and very alert. He loved the moon as a baby. He would always look at the moon and point at it, even before he could speak. We always thought he would become an astronaut. When he was a bit older he would throw pebbles into the manhole covers (the ones that look like a grate). He had a certain sound he always imitated when the pebble hit the ground. We did that for HOURS! I do miss those times, they are so special with the first child.
Aw, i love these snippets of his past :-) Yes, he has grown into a fine young man and it has been a privilege to watch from afar, all of the gang grow and change :-)
DeletePrayers for you that you do not succumb and that the rest are feeling better soon xx
Thanks, San, for those kind words. Kind of funny that through this blog more people than just I have witnessed his growing-up.
DeleteWell, we are still sick here, only Charlotte and Flora are going to church. Jonathan has had a relapse and developed a fever again. I am having an earache. Maybe tomorrow we will have to take a few people to the doctor.
Dearest Eva, your post made me laugh! So much going on! Everything breaking down . . and Jonathan turning 18! Such a milestone in our society! Happy Birthday and his baby picture brings tears to my eyes :) What a beautiful baby and what warm memories (and now a handsome young man!). You're in our thoughts and prayers for better health and enjoy these crazy holidays! I send you a big hug :) xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteAh, that is why all this happened! At least it brought some joy into the world :).
DeleteYes, it is a milestone, especially in Europe (I think here many people really think 21 is equally important.) Isn't that a cute picture? It has always been one of my favorite pictures of him. Especially because he rarely slept. Actually, he still has the same expression when he sleeps, it has not changed so much. When I saw him get his hair cut today and looked at his face from a distance (in the mirror), all of a sudden, I felt very happy about the young man he has become. Sometimes, when your children are with you all the time, you do not really "see" them. But that bit of a distance made all the difference. I am glad he is my son and although we have our "discussions," there is a deep bond of love there. I am so glad we have been able to homeschool him and grow together. Pretty soon he will leave our family and I know he will be greatly missed.
Thanks for your prayers for good health. This afternoon I thought that I was getting this bug too. I really hope I won't. Peter is gone, three children are still sick, and college classes will start on Tuesday!! I have done nothing to prepare and won't be able to while Peter is gone. So please, I need to stay healthy!
There is a package on the way to you. I hope I included everything I was going to include, it has been all a blur with trying to get out so many packages the last couple of days. In case I sent you two German or two English Christmas letters, I do apologize.
P.S. Yes, San is right . . where did the time go?
ReplyDelete18 years, it went soooo fast!
DeleteErstens herzliche Glückwünsche an Jonathan!!!!
DeleteHappy birthday, Jonathon!
DeleteThanks so much, Alexandra. Now we just have to get all healthy to able to celebrate again.
