Paper and Wool/Papier und Wolle

This week Veronika is doing a science week. We are taking a look at everyday materials in order to find out where they come from or how they are made.  So far we have covered paper and wool.  For paper we walked from room to room to find out as many products made out of paper as possible.  That is a huge task, there are not just books, but sheets of paper, toilet paper, paper labels, games, tea bags, coffee filters, and more.  We then learned about where paper comes from and how it is made.  Live Education! has some wonderful ideas, but I also like to look at Peter Lustig's ideas (in German).  It tied in wonderfully with our visit to the library with the old manuscripts: What did people use to write on before the invention of paper?  We then learned about cotton fiber and wood fibers as sources for paper, comparing it to the nests paper wasps build in the summer on our eaves outside.  Our project for this material was making a cup and plates out of papier-mâché.  We still need to wait for it to dry.

Our second topic was wool.  We started out with where wool comes from.  The picture book Pelle's New Suit was a wonderful introduction to this question.  We then talked about the many sheep we have already seen and visited and also about the people we know that still spin or the museums we have visited that offer live demonstrations of that skill.  Wool dyeing and weaving also fit in here beautifully.  Our baby lambskin offered a great opportunity to touch some wool and use a carder to card it.  We also got out some raw wool and started a ball felting project.  White and colored wool put together make pretty small balls.

Veronika is also still knitting with wool: two horse legs have been finished!

What else?  I finished my first quarterly  reports, we had somebody take a look at our kitchen floor and counters because we need some replacements, we want to see "The Importance of Being Earnest" on campus, Miriam is going to visit her friend over the weekend, Charlotte has another "horse hour," there will be a new Gloria for the church choir for Peter and Charlotte to sing, we went to Mass on Mother Cabrini's feast day with veneration of her relic, and we will have our last gymnastics class for the year on Saturday.

Was sonst noch?

  2. I had trouble posting yesterday. I love jonathan's abstract art and the felted balls are delightful. It looks like flora had just as much fun as Veronika!

Sounds like you have a busy few days ahead.

    Love to you all

    1. Thanks, San. Flora is always happy when she can do exactly the same things as Veronika. Tonight, after I had come back from "The Importance of Being Earnest," she was sitting at the table "reading" the book, the way she had seen Veronika do it earlier. Big siblings are a huge motivation.

    1. Thanks, Dorina. Horses and horse legs, why horses? Did you attach the legs to the horses afterwards?

I have friends that celebrated Mother Cabrini's feast day there at the chapel and really liked the atmosphere. So peaceful, they said. You have to let me know how you like it. Thanks for the link!
