Recent Learning Endeavors/Lernabenteuer der letzten Tage

It's snowing again today, and tomorrow we will change our clocks to daylight savings time!  This seems so bizarre!

What have we been doing recently?

Coyote Places the Stars (Aladdin Picture Books)The Story of Jumping Mouse (Caldecott Honor Books)The First Strawberries (Picture Puffins)Miriam and I have been enjoying lots of beautiful picture books with Native American legends.  Here is a selection:  Coyote Places the Stars, Dance of the Sacred CircleThe Story of Jumping Mouse, The Mud Pony, and The First Strawberries. We also continued to read these legends.  Miriam illustrated the story "How Snake Brought Rain to the Shoshone" and wrote a summary of the story in cursive! Another fun activity for her was the making of a "pokean," which is made out of corn husks and feathers tied together with a rubber band.  It is used for a game where each player tries to keep the pokean in the air for as long as possible batting it with his hand.  It reminded us of badminton without a bat.

Miriam und ich haben wunderschöne Bilderbücher mit Indianerlegenden gelesen: Cayote Places the Stars, Dance of the Sacred Circle, The Story of Jumping Mouse, The Mud Pony, The First Strawberries und Buffalo Dance.

Rabbit Ears Treasury of Tall Tales: Volume One: Davy Crockett, Rip Van Winkle, Johnny Appleseed, Paul BunyanPaddle-to-the-Sea (Sandpiper Books)Charlotte and I have been enjoying Paddle-to-the-Sea.  There is so much to discover in this book!  We also went on rabbit trails and learned about sawmills, Canada Geese, and ponds.  We hope to watch the DVD of the book over the weekend.  We've been listening to some American tall tales on Rabbit Ears Treasury of Tall Tales: Volume One: Davy Crockett, Rip Van Winkle, Johnny Appleseed, Paul Bunyan.  This will finish our first block on North American Geography.

Man kann so schön andere Bücher miteinbeziehen, u.a.

The Fairy-Land of Science (Yesterday's Classics)Jonathan is almost finished with his physics block for this school year.  In addition to all the wonderful topics we have already studied, we have added the camera obscura and constructed one out of an oatmeal container.  We also built a telescope similar to the one Galileo built and read more about telescopes in Science and Living in God's World.  Another science book we've been enjoying (Charlotte Mason Style) has been Fairyland of Science, particularly the chapter called "Sunbeams and the Work They Do".

Little FishFritz's FishFish is FishRainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea (Rainbow Fish (North-South Books))Veronika is still working on her "rainbow fish," but it's almost finished.  She also made a fish out of Fimo, which just needs a glaze.  I'll post some pictures of those next week.  We've been reading the following fish books:  Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea, Fish is Fish, Fritz's Fish, and Little Fish

Tomorrow we will have gymnastics, swimming, and ballet, all between 9:00 and 12:00!

  1. what a wonderful Post! Your children are accomplishing so much while having so much fun. When they are asked decades from now what they did as kids they'll just say 'play and have fun' because they never realized they were learning such a great deal.
