Study Is Hard Work

This year we are using Saturday afternoons to work on "life skills."  What are those, you might ask.  For us they include home economics, studying for the standardized tests, including the PSAT, learning about organization skills, and learning about how to study, or how to read a book.  Of course, you could also include gardening, financial skills, typing, library skills, and many other topics.  So for today, Miriam and Veronika made a carrot tray and a vegetable dip, Charlotte worked on her test prep for the standardized tests in spring, Jonathan worked on studying for the PSAT, and both, Charlotte and Jonathan, started the book Study is Hard Work, which seems to be excellent.  I guess I could add that Flora studied library skills because we spent almost an hour in the library while Jonathan was serving at the funeral.  She helped me with looking up books and finding them in the different rooms.

Was wohl dazugehört, mögen sich einige fragen.

Liebe Eva, heute kam eure Weihnachtspost! Herzlichen Dank.

  3. How funny your parcel arrived today! The towel is hanging in the kitchen and the book is on the mantelpiece waiting to be read. As always Peter's Christmas letter/ essay! Was a joy to read, so funny.

Hope you are having a good start to the week

    1. I am so glad it didn't get lost!! The towel was made by a local woman. The design is very typical for American kitchens. People hang them on the handles of their ovens a lot. Do you have them in England? Have a wonderful week!

  4. Yes we do have them over here. My mum in law made me some many years ago and they were well used, thank you so much.

I am hoping to read a chapter of the book after tea this evening.

    1. Interesting, I had never seen them in Germany. I hope you like the book. We also have a copy and it is a well loved book here.

  5. I'm always impressed with what you fit in on a busy day :) The dip looks delicious! What did they put in it? The study book looks very good, as does Jonathan's class. Morgana is reading Jane Austen these days, and doing SAT prep for Math on Wednesday mornings. She plans to take the test with her friend in spring. I'm glad to hear your pastor is okay and is resting.

Are all of you tired of the cold yet?!

    1. They used a recipe from one of my German cookbooks. I think it had half a cup of mayonnaise, four tbsp. of whipped cream, 125 g of grated cheese, cilantro, some minced silver skin onions (pickled), some salt, cayenne pepper, and orange juice concentrate.

Charlotte started reading "Pride and Prejudice," which will be also covered by the Center for Lit class later in the year. So far she doesn't care so much for it, but she has been sitting in on Jonathan's Center for Lit class and is also reading the books. Our current book is "Nicholas Nickleby." She is really enjoying that one. Has Morgana done the PSAT? We haven't thought about the SAT so far, because due to our summer in Europe Jonathan is behind in his math and his work for the catholic long distance school he is enrolled at. I don't think he will finish his high school on schedule :). Does Morgana know what she wants to do when she is done with homeschool?

Our pastor said Mass on Tuesday, the first Mass after his illness, but I didn't attend because I couldn't get Veronika and Flora ready on time. Jonathan, Charlotte, and Miriam went with friends and said he seemed to be a bit weak, but doing well.

    2. Hello Eva, I'd like to try the dip recipe one day. I've written it down. I'll let you know if I do :)

No, Morgana has never done the PSAT. I don't think her friend has either, so I'm glad she's practicing. I wish you luck with Jonathan's path through high school, and I think the schedule you are on is just fine :) Right now, Morgana is very interested in performing and has written up an acting resume for herself. She's been investigating the local acting program at the theatre school up the street, and will apply for a scholarship for next year. She's also considering a college, but not until after the possible year at the acting school.

It's nice that the three oldest were able to attend mass with your pastor who is on the mend. I hope you and Veronika and Flora enjoyed quiet time together at home.

    3. Good luck with the dip. Everybody thought it was really good and it was gone in no time.

When I read about Morgana's plans I had to think of a good friend of our family in Germany. He is younger than I am. He went to an acting school without telling his parents at the beginning. He comes from a very old and important German family. He is now a famous German actor: Max von Pufendorf. I still remember him as the little boy that made his first holy communion :). He is also happily married and father of two children I believe. His wife designs clothes and has her own store in Berlin. I hope Morgana will be successful with her application. It is probably not easy to get into an acting school, but Max managed to get into one without any special training. It was just his deepest desire.
