Living Math/Lebendige Mathe

Peter's laptop had a virus and got fixed today so I can type a bit again.  Jonathan and Charlotte had an orthodontist appointment today and on Monday Jonathan and Veronika had an eye doctor appointment. Jonathan will need braces, Charlotte won't, Jonathan will need stronger glasses, and Veronika has to do some eye therapy exercises that use a Brock string for the next six to eight weeks.  While Peter took Jonathan and Charlotte to the orthodontist, Veronika, Miriam, and I did some math exercises.  Veronika is working on geometrical shapes (circle and triangle so far) and has been running them outside with Flora in tow.  We have also drawn them in the air with arms and feet and finally traced them on the board.  The last step was to put them in the main lesson books.  We also did math with dominoes as pictured in the book Domino Addition.

Miriam has started a block on fractions after doing a short review of multiplication and long division.  Today we used three apples.  The first was cut in eighths, the second in twelfths, and the third in tenths.  We didn't immediately go the eights, twelfths, and tenths, but started out with halves, thirds, and fifths, making them smaller each time.  After we had cut all those apples it was time for a snack.  How convenient to be able to eat your math problem!

It was good of you to get those doctor appointments in! We need a few visits to the dentist . .

    1. I'm playing catch-up here, after such a long break due to traveling.

I have to go back to the dentist on Thursday to get a filling. We also have house repairmen coming with estimates for the floor and a guy from NY to look at our insulation. We qualify for some state help to improve the insulation of our house. He was supposed to be here Monday, but now he is coming Friday. That day we wanted to go swimming with friends, but it looks like it'll be too cold anyway. I still need to get glasses myself, but it's hard to find the time right now to drive up to the city to get taken care of. I hope you'll be able to find the time to see the dentist.

  2. Wonderful pictures if outdoor shapes and apple fractions! A good reminder for me-- sometimes I forget that part of learning. By the way, my daughters and I thoroughly enjoyed your Europe posts. What a wonderful adventure! Also, I think my German is improving as I read your posts in German. Thank you!

    1. Hello Barbara (and Patrick),
Yes, it's true, I also tend to just open a book and say do problems 1-20, but the other type of learning is actually sometimes more productive and sticks longer!

I'm glad you enjoyed the European adventures and I'm glad that my blog is like a language lesson. I still owe you an email and will get to that hopefully soon.

      Thanks for your comment!

  3. Da wird ja fleißig gerechnet...! Lecker! :)
