Dam/Damm

Today we went on a guided tour of the Mount Morris Dam.  It was one of our local homeschooling group events.  The Mount Morris Dam was built to prevent flooding of Rochester.  Here you can see a few pictures of those devastating floods:

We spent about an hour on and inside the dam.  Because of safety reasons, we weren't allowed to take pictures inside the dam.  There are many tunnels inside and it is very cold and dark.

Flora was all excited about the tour.  Here she is in a stroller (We hadn't brought our stroller, but it turned out that there would be a lot of steep walking so friends gave us one of their strollers):

In 1972 the dam was put to the test when Hurricane Agnes reached the region.  You can see how high the water rose -- almost to the top of the dam-- here.  It withstood the water and saved Rochester from another bad flood.

There were many turkey vultures circling over the ravine:

Viele Truthahngeier flogen über der Schlucht:

And beautiful flowers:

Und wunderschöne Blumen:

After the tour we had a wonderful picnic with friends.  Then we spent a long time on the playground (sorry, I didn't take pictures of that, I was too busy talking).  There is also a lovely visitor center that gives a glimpse into the construction of the dam.  They have waterless toilets:

On our way we also stopped to look at ruins of a part of the former Erie Canal  (Listen to "Low Bridge" here).

    1. Oh, Veronika was very scared before the tour. She didn't want to go inside. Once we were inside, though, she didn't mind so much. The tunnels weren't as narrow as she had pictured them in her mind. It's so hard to believe that the normally very calm Genesee can get so wild. I have never seen it that way.

Now I'm up to date with all the gossip :)!

  5. Fascinating! I love canals, and the Erie would be a nice one to see. We have the remnants of the one here in nearby Richmond which used to go all the way to West Virginia.

Wouldn't it be nice to travel by canal on a barge, just like in Holland? Slow travel is nice sometimes.

    1. Interesting, is there still some of it in use? I'm asking because there are still stretches in use up in Lockport. You can even take a boat on it and look at the famous locks there!

Traveling on a barge would be fun. When we were in London, we once took the subway to a canal port. From there you could take a barge to get to the zoo! That was almost more interesting than the zoo itself. It was also very quiet and peaceful. Around Berlin, in Germany, there are also barges like that. You can rent them in the summer.

  6. I would like to go back to Berlin. I went with my parents a few times when I was very young, but I don't remember much. We were only there for a short time. My SIL has been to Berlin recently with my MIL, who is from there. The videos were so interesting.

Richmond does have some of the canals open. You can take a tourist boat through the canals for a historical civil war tour. They have a waterfall section with the original locks that you can see just for educatonal purposes.

    1. I have never been to Berlin after the reunification! I also would love to go back there. I once attended the German Catholic Day there. That was fun! We also went there on a class trip, I spent a whole summer there working in a senior citizen home with young people from all over the world, and we have friends there. There is so much to see and do!

So you have similar locks than we do. Have you ever done the tour?
