Recent Picture Books and St. Martin

Our glass jar lanterns/Unsere Glaslaternen

Hiawatha (Picture Puffins)On November 10, 1855 Henry Wadsworth Longfellow published his epic poem The Song of Hiawatha.  It is written in the same meter as the Kalevala, which Charlotte is studying right now.  To honor that day we read the picture book Hiawatha, which only shows the boyhood of Hiawatha.  The beautiful pictures also tie in with local history and geography.

Quiet in the GardenVeronika and Flora enjoyed a fairly new book by Aliki called Quiet in the Garden.  There are many animals to discover.  Then today we read Thunder Cake, in which an old woman from Russia heals her granddaughter of being afraid of thunder storms by baking a Thunder Cake.

For Martinmas we've been practicing all our English and German Martinmas songs.  St. Martin is of course the favorite one.  Below is a video that is supposed to show the connection of the pagan and Christian traditions of the St. Martin legend.  I'm posting it here for those of my readers who don't know the song.

Am 10. November ist Henry Wadsworth Longfellows episches Gedicht The Song of Hiawatha veröffentlicht worden.

  1. Oh, what lovely lanterns. I think we'll make some like it. It looks pretty fireproof too LOL

  2. We learned to make them at playgroup at our local Waldorf School more than eight years ago. They are great to use with small children because -- as you guessed it -- they are fireproof and small! You need liquid wallpaper paste and tissue paper. To make a handle you can use two pipe cleaners. Good luck with yours.
