When we were getting up this morning, an owl was calling. In many cultures the call of an owl was a sign of death, so it was the perfect symbol for today's celebration: All Souls. Jonathan, Charlotte, and Miriam made it to early Mass with their Daddy. Flora and Veronika slept late, and Flora has had a cough for a while. So I stayed home with them. After Mass, Father D. went to one of the local cemeteries and blessed the graves. Jonathan always helps him, he is an altar boy, but by some twist of fate, the handle of the holy water bucket fell off and the holy water spilled on the ground. Luckily, Father D. still had some holy water in his holy water sprinkler. Jonathan was very embarrassed, although it was not his fault.
Poster of the deceased (I covered personal information for this picture.)/Poster unserer Verstobenen (Ich habe private Informationen vor dem Foto abgedeckt.)
On the gravestones you can write the names of the deceased./Auf die Grabsteine kann man die Namen der Verstorbenen schreiben.
This year we also added something else. The children are going to pray the St. Gertrude Prayer for the Poor Souls in Purgatory. Each child (except Flora) received a prayer card
and all the older ones a chart to keep track of the prayers said.
Veronika will use these stickers instead. They all really liked the idea and have already said a large number of prayers. Tomorrow we'll participate in a field trip with other homeschoolers.
Lifting up prayers for your loved ones who have gone before you.
ReplyDeleteHi Eva,
ReplyDeleteWe must be on the same track! I've gathered pictures of deceased family members and am really impressed with your gravestone imagery and had quite forgotten the St Gertrude prayer! Would like to incorporate some of your ideas if I may and promise to link back to you for the credit!!
Sorry to read about Jonathan's misfortune with the Holy Water, he's at that age where things like that, can be a big deal. All credit to him for being faithful in helping Father in the first place.
Hope you have lovely time with the other HE families today.
Blessings
San xx
Dave reckons our pumpkins must be different, the walls were a good inch thick after scooping out the seeds!
ReplyDeleteThe pumpkin pie was delicious!
Hope you had a good day

Thanks for the prayers, Alexandra!
ReplyDeleteHello San, of course, go ahead and use some of my ideas -- I'm glad if they are helpful. To post pictures of your deceased family members is also a good exercise in family history and sometimes general history. My children keep looking at the pictures.
ReplyDeleteHas Benedict had his First Holy Communion yet? I'm asking because I was wondering if he is an altar server. Here in the U.S. most children have their First Holy Communion at the age of 7, in Germany you are normally 9.
Benedict isn't ready yet to make his first holy communion. He's only just seven and quite young in some ways, so we'll hold off for a year or so. His older sisters made there first communion at the age of seven, but girls are different aren't they?!!
ReplyDeleteI think the church in Germany has the right idea!
Glad your field trip went well, you were blessed with good weather, here we have typical grey skies and rain!
Blessings San xx
