(If I have forgotten something it's because all those subjects (required by homeschool law in NYS) are quite confusing on paper).

I will be teaching at the college/Beim College werde ich einen Kurs unterrichten, nämlich:
  • German 101
  • Deutsch für Anfänger
 Some of my German teaching books in my office.
Einige meiner Deutschkursbücher in meinem Büro.

Peter and I will be teaching in the same building and will have also offices in the same building.  I have mine on the second floor, he has his on the third floor.

Now before starting all this, I will get my first dental crown tomorrow (too bad) and we will need to get new glasses for myself and Jonathan.

  2. I am in awe! You are one busy family yet you always seem calm and centred. Do you find it a challenge to fit so much in? I am a melancholic introvert and I struggle with arranging opportunities for the children because unless it is a walk on a deserted beach or wood, I would always rather stay st home.

    1. Thanks for the huge compliment, Lucy, we also have our good and bad days and I'm not always calm. You know, my children did zero activities when they were little, except a weekly playgroup at the Waldorf school. Once they are six or seven years old, I always make sure that they get some physical exercise outside the home. Here in our little village there is only swimming, gymnastics, and ballet. The homeschool co-op offers some P.E. too, that's where we are doing volleyball. The older they get, the more activities they need, though. They want to be with other children, they like the challenge and they develop their own interests. I don't push them into anything, they only do things they are interested in. Most activities are within walking distance. I only have to walk Veronika and Flora to ballet, the older ones walk by themselves. So I'm not very much involved with those activities. I could never do them if I had to spend my time in the car with them to get to zillions of places. We have a very firm rhythm in our house, meals are important gathering points, chores need to be done, and rest time after lunch is a must. If somebody had told me when I started out with my first homescchool year that I would be doing all these things, I would have said, "no way," but you grow with your children in that area. I'm also a person who needs lots of time by herself and I'm not a social butterfly. But now, with no baby in sight anymore, I think I can venture out more. I'm glad I didn't do that when my children were really little. I'm glad we've had so much home time. Now we have reached a different season in our lives, I just have to make sure that Flora gets enough time at home although she likes to be out, she just wants to do things like the others. That's why I started her with ballet earlier than the others. Wait until your children reach age 12 or older. I bet things will change for you too. It will just all fall into place.

    2. Very well said, Eva. I admire your cornerstones of meals, chores, rest and prayer/church. And it is important that the older ones can get around on their own. Congrats on finishing the IHIPS. You have much more to do than I :) It looks like a very fun and exciting year. I do agree that it looks very confusing written down. I often equate it to a knitting pattern . . one really must "do" it in order to understand what it's all about. And flexibility is a key component. Learning is fun and too much worry over what is covered and what isn't makes for a stressful life. It's a journey, and hopefully we can enjoy it and remember to taste the strawberries along the way (that's what my acting teacher used to say).

      It's Jonathan's confirmation year! How exciting. And Charlotte will be taking horseback riding lessons . . !! Fun! I think I'll lay out M and C's year online when I return home. We should be returning a week from Thursday, though Morgana and Greg will be going to Connecticut for two more weeks of Sturbridge work. Morgana is required to put in 15 days a year. So far she has only done five in July. I think she's looking forward to seeing what Sturbridge is like in September.

      Oh!! I wish I could attend your German 101 class! But I do have my CDs, and I found an "Erstes Buch" on my Mom's shelf! Maybe I can try and keep up on my own . . maybe you can sometimes fill us in on what your class is like? I know that is a tall order! Often when the year starts I feel like I'm on a runaway train and all thoughts of living the year flexible and stress-free and remembering to taste the strawberries can fall by the wayside as I feed the coal into the fire to keep up . . . and steer to stay on a true course . . . Ahhh. I only have a few more years left . . I cherish each crazy moment. What's funny is that the older I grow, the crazier it all feels. Life goes faster as I go slower. Ah, well . . enjoy these late summer days!

    3. I'm curious, don't you have a deadline for the IHIPs? It's normally August 15, I believe, only when the school district is late you are allowed to hand them in later as well. Ours was late this year, so I had more time to finish them (I still have to drop them off or mail them, though). Yes, on paper it all looks very daunting, but once you get started it's not so bad, and yes, you can have fun (and eat strawberries).

      Jonathan's confirmation will be next fall. There is a one year preparation class with a weekend retreat, community service, and more. I think he will enjoy it. Charlotte will get her lessons in exchange for babysitting. What a happy arrangement! September should be nice in Sturbridge, not so hot I hope!

      I would love to have you in class, our French professor told me the same thing, but he is teaching at the same time I'm teaching. All my children want to come also, but won't be able to on a regular basis. I also will have students auditing. I have to be careful about what I write on my teaching, I have to remember the privacy of my students. But maybe I can find a way to not hurt anybody and still share a bit. There won't be any pictures about the teaching, though :). It is true, it gets crazier and more hectic and sometimes exhausting and then all of a sudden it will be all over and the children will be gone and life will move toward a different stage. Although I still have little Flora I feel time passing away much more than when I was younger. It might also be because I feel that I am also aging, can't read small print without reading glasses, etc. Thanks for all your thoughts. By the way, Peter will be coming to NYC soon, maybe you could meet!?

  3. Liebe Eva,

Also, am 2.

Möchtest Du wirklich etwas über "two-way prepositions" lernen?

  5. Wow!!

    I loved reading your reply to Lucy, it really summed up how your family life and homeschool activities intertwine.

    Will Peter be home to settle Flora and the kids whilst you teach or are the big ones helping out?

    Love to you

    San xx

    1. Probably he will be home and supervise their independent studies. He will have to entertain Flora, though. When I'm done teaching, I will have to get home quickly because he teaches right after me. Jonathan and Charlotte will be in charge then briefly until I arrive.

      The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Is the Hand That Rules The World

      Blessings on the hand of women!
      Angels guard its strength and grace,
      In the palace, cottage, hovel,
      Oh, no matter where the place;
      Would that never storms assailed it,
      Rainbows ever gently curled;
      For the hand that rocks the cradle
      Is the hand that rules the world.
      Infancy's the tender fountain,
      Power may with beauty flow,
      Mother's first to guide the streamlets,
      From them souls unresting grow--
      Grow on for the good or evil,
      Sunshine streamed or evil hurled;
      For the hand that rocks the cradle
      Is the hand that rules the world.
      Woman, how divine your mission
      Here upon our natal sod!
      Keep, oh, keep the young heart open
      Always to the breath of God!
      All true trophies of the ages
      Are from mother-love impearled;
      For the hand that rocks the cradle
      Is the hand that rules the world.
      Blessings on the hand of women!
      Fathers, sons, and daughters cry,
      And the sacred song is mingled
      With the worship in the sky--
      Mingles where no tempest darkens,
      Rainbows evermore are hurled;
      For the hand that rocks the cradle
      Is the hand that rules the world.

      William Ross Wallace

      Wann ich blogge, weiß ich wirklich noch nicht, vielleicht am Wochenede? Mal sehen, wie sich alles so einspielt. Erstmal muß mein Lehrplan jetzt für die Studenten fertig werden.

  7. What an amazing year that you have planned. I am in awe. I scanned your teaching books and recognize the book "Deutsch Heute". That is the textbook I used in University to learn German.

    1. Funny, that is only a review copy, I will be teaching with "Neue Horizonte." I have taught with "Deutsch, na klar!" and "Modern German." Did you like "Deutsch heute"?

      Thanks for your kind words. You can tell that my children are really getting older and have developed more interests. I hope we will all have fun and not break down.
