Tuesday Events/Dienstagsereignisse

On our way to early Mass this morning, we saw our first robin.  So spring must really be coming.  Veronika is counting the days until the official beginning.  The church we went to now has Lighthouse Media CDs for sale.  These CDs feature Catholic authors or teachers who address a different Catholic topic on each CD, e.g. confession, Catholic spirituality, the year of the priest.  We might try one of these CDs next time.  The suggested donation for each is only $3.00. 

In the library we found an African folk tale in Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears: A West African Tale, an Arabian tale called Clever Ali, a book on animals and their way of saying "hello" called Prairie Dogs Kiss and Lobsters Wave: How Animals Say Hello, which nicely ties in with Charlotte's animal studies, and a colorful book on gardening called My Garden. 

At home we all worked on our main lessons.  Charlotte copied a poem by Tennyson next to her drawing of an eagle.  We then studied the cow.  That involved making butter out of sweet cream, which was lots of fun.  Charlotte put the cream together with two marbles into a bottle and shook it until it turned into butter.  We then poured off the buttermilk of and gave it to our cat Julius.  The butter needed to be washed and finally worked, i.e. Charlotte turned the butter onto a wooden board and "worked" it with a wooden spoon to get rid of all the water.  "Working" here means to press the butter flat, wipe away any moisture that appears, and repeat. 

Miriam had to discover how heavy her ruler was by using a scale and playdough.

Jonathan and I studied hexameters.  Later on there was swimming and ballet. 

Auf dem Weg zur Frühmesse haben wir ein amerikanisches Rotkehlchen gesehen.  Diese Vögel sind Zugvögel.  Wenn sie zurückkommen, ist der Frühling nicht mehr weit!  Veronika zählt schon die Tage.  Unsere Kirche bietet jetzt katholische CDs von namenhaften Katholiken an, die zu bestimmten Themen wie Beichte, das Jahr des Priesters oder katholischer Spiritualität sprechen.  Wir haben interessante Titel gesehen und wollen vielleicht nächstes Mal eine CD kaufen.  Sie kosten nur 3 Dollar.   In der Bücherei haben wir die oben abgebildeten Bücher gefunden: ein afrikanisches Volksmärchen, ein modernes arabisches Märchen, ein Buch über Begrüßungsweisen von Tieren und ein Gartenbuch.  Zu Hause haben wir dann weiter an unseren Hauptepochen gearbeitet.  Charlotte hat ein Gedicht von Tennyson neben ihre Zeichnung des Adlers geschrieben.  Dann haben wir etwas über die Kuh gelernt und dazu Butter aus Sahne gemacht:  Charlotte hat Sahne mit zwei Murmeln in eine Flasche gegeben und so lange geschüttelt, bis daraus Butter geworden ist.  Die entstandene Buttermilch hat unser Kater Julius getrunken.  Charlotte hat die Butter dann gewaschen und so lange mit einem Holzlöffel auf einem Brett bearbeitet, bis keine Flüssigkeit mehr zu bemerken war.  Das Endresultat hat sehr lecker geschmeckt.  Jonathan hat etwas über Hexameter gelernt.  Miriam mußte herausfinden, wieviel ihr Lineal in Knete wiegt.  Nachmittags gab es dann Schwimmen und Ballett.
