Flora constructed a saltwater density tower for biology.
Each colored water jar had a different amount of salt inside.
The result was a beautiful "rainbow tower."
So ist ein wunderschöner "Regenbogenturm" entstanden.
Here she is making progress on her skirt.
Ihr Rock nimmt auch Form an.
It has been raining a lot, and our roof is leaking at several spots.
Flora is trying something new this year (in addition to ballet): contemporary dance.
And I am continuing to share some more pictures of Charlotte's and Veronika's drive.
Utah: August 31/31. August
Beaver, Utah
We are so busy with teaching, learning, ballet, etc. that I do not get a chance to write much (or read other blogs). I had a father of a student in class today (he used to be a student at our college when he was young and also took German). That was fun!
Last night, Leo was chasing a skunk (a skunk that was larger than Leo)! Miriam discovered him doing so and thought something should be done about it. So I went outside, chasing Leo. It was probably an odd sight: We were all walking along our street with the skunk in front, Leo coming next, and then I. The skunk stopped at a fence facing us. Leo also stopped and just sat there staring at the skunk. He was ignoring me. The skunk started to hiss/growl; I did not know skunks do that, but Leo kept looking at it. I thought that was my chance, and I grabbed Leo who luckily was so surprised that he did not struggle. I safely got him inside.

Oh, that Leo! Yes, that sounds like a funny parade you were on! I'm glad you were able to scoop him up without a problem. A run-in with a skunk would not have been good, and he is still healing from the last confrontation! The girls' travel photos are lovely, and I hear you about not having as much time. How sweet that the father of your student visited the class, and he once was a student at the same school :) Flora's contemporary film is wonderful to see. Did the students pick the song themselves, or did the teacher?
ReplyDeleteYou should have seen him: No fear whatsoever! And he is afraid of so many things. That skunk was cool as a cucumber. Peter said he saw two skunks fighting down the hill here the other day. I am glad that Leo was not there also. Yes, it was fun to have the father. I even know the German teacher he used to have! I have no idea about those songs. I have to ask her.
DeleteLeo the Brave, until he isn't! Sometimes we have to keep an eye on our pets (Pluto often follows Zuzu around and she does not like it!) I wouldn't want to get in between the two fighting skunks!
DeleteHe was trying to get the skunk again, just now! Peter was sweeping the garage, and the skunk showed up. That attracted Leo, and he went under our van to watch it. When the skunk moved, Leo was getting ready to follow. Peter called me on his cell phone from the garage to get my attention and come outside to "rescue" Leo. I managed to do that. I carried him inside, and he was quite mad with me. He went straight to Flora, who was taking a bath after her ballet classes. He jumped up onto the bathtub and hit her softly on the head, three times. He always does that when he gets upset. He then got his toys and threw them down the basement steps; another way for him to show that he is angry. But at least he is safe.
Delete!!! I'm sitting here laughing! Leo is so funny! Poor thing! He never gets to have fun, does he? :D Maybe he and the skunk are friends? Of course I'm leery that the skunk showed up as they normally keep a good distance, don't they? . . oh, but now I'm remembering a skunk that wandered onto the patio of an outdoor restaurant Greg and I were eating at last summer when traveling through Lenox, Massachusetts! It crawled through a hole in a fence and checked under the tables for scraps. It was nighttime and quite dark and I saw this small figure waddling around my feet. I thought it was someone's dog! It did not stay long and I stared at it with my mouth open in surprise. After it wandered away again through the fence hole, I looked up and another customer was watching it too. We both looked at each and laughed. Greg didn't even see it, but I told him about it and then an hour or two later, when we were walking back to the inn we were staying at, we saw it crossing the street in front of us! So funny. They're kind of cute and pretty, but I'm well aware to keep my distance! (sigh) Leo is a handful, Eva. I hope he doesn't take too long to gain some maturity and slow down a bit! His head butts with Flora and toy throwing are a good way to vent his energy and are endearing, but he keeps you on your toes! Maybe you can make him an obstacle course . . the difficulty is that they seem to get bored rather quickly. We have a similar problem with Cricket. He really would like to explore more and he can get tired of the same old games with us.
DeleteOh, I am so glad it made you laugh! Peter has decided that Leo is in love with the skunk. He goes completely crazy when he sees it or hears it. It is so white and fluffy (almost no black). It must be very attractive to him.
DeleteYour skunk story is also quite amusing. I think they like to look for food when they get a chance .
Oh, Flora has played so many games with him, but once he hears or sees something outside, all play is forgotten. The day before yesterday, he caught a woodpecker and hid with it under the porch. He never kills the birds but carries them around. Miriam managed to distract him so that he opened his mouth, and the woodpecker got away. But then Leo was so upset that they had taken away his "toy" that he tried to bite Flora's skirt. When I got home and heard the whole story, I looked at him and spoke sternly to him. His only response was to take his paw and hit me three times on my head!
Maybe Cricket needs a skunk friend :).
Cricket would love a skunk friend (!), and Leo has such personality!
DeleteMaybe skunks are similar to cats in their appearance from the cat's point of view. Maybe that is why they like them?
DeleteI have no idea, but it's an interesting thought! Maybe it's just Leo!
DeleteP.S. I loved the salt experiment!
ReplyDeleteIt was fun and actually worked!
DeleteTha't always very satisfying :)
DeleteVery true, the older I get, the more annoyed I get when those experiments do not work.
DeleteLol, yes!
DeleteAnd so many do not work!
DeleteThe salt experiment is really cool. Well done to Flora with her skirt and trying contemporary dance. Leaking roofs are a real nuisance, we’ve had several leaks this past year and now we have issues with leaking pipes from the upstairs bathroom 🙄. Your story of the skunk had me smiling and thank goodness you managed to catch Leo before you were all engulfed in a cloud of ‘eau de Skunk!’
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday xx
It was a fun and something different for a change. That roof is leaking at too many spots. Oh, leaking pipes is also bad! Have you gotten a plumber? Yes, cats and skunks are not good. Julius once got sprayed into the eyes! We had to take him to the vet. I am glad that the skunk decided to leave Leo alone. Happy Wednesday to you!
DeletePlumber turning up this afternoon for roof leak and we also have a significant problem with our drains! Every neighbour on the street has a set of drain rods as the drains are shared before being directed into the main sewer. We suspect that the drain pipes have possibly sagged under the back patio and poor Ben and our lovely neighbour John were rodding drains yesterday afternoon whilst we were forty miles away in Skipton 🙄. We have a pipe scan booked to ascertain exactly what’s going on. What I can tell you that since Mum died all sorts of things have gone horrible wrong 😬
DeleteHugs to you
San xx
The plumber is fixing the roof? Hmm, I am not sure what drain rods are. Nobody here has ever mentioned them. Is it common to have a pipe scan? I have never heard that private people can do that here. Good for Ben! I hope it will all get fixed soon. Supposedly somebody will look at our roof next week. It is really hard to find handymen out here.
DeleteWe thought the upstairs leak might have been from bathroom pipes but no the roof is actually leaking in several places so we will need a complete roof.
DeleteThe drains are a complete mess which will require major excavation work along the full length of the house from the side to the back. Whilst the work is undertaken we will have to live elsewhere. Thankfully we’ve found someone who knows what he is doing and can see that this needs urgent attention. Never rains but it pours x
Hi San, I saw this come through and just wanted to wish you luck on this major home improvement project! And good luck to you too, Eva, when you have your estimate of what needs to be done next week. My sister and I know we'll have to deal with a similar situation soon, also. My dad last had the roof done in 2007.
DeleteThanks Dorina x
DeleteHa, we were also told that the roof needs to replaced, but that is so costly here. The handyman will come back and fix the worst leaks for now. Our roof is almost 25 years old, so old enough that you have to replace it. Do your neighbors also need drain work?
DeleteWe have some trees that are ruining our shed, but we have not found anybody who can take them down because they are so close to the power lines, but not so close that the electric company has to take them down. Not all tree workers are certified to take them down. One of the bigger branches of the trees in question has fallen and has torn a huge hole into our shed. So that his another problem we have not solved.
