In her online live theater class, Flora studied Greek and Medieval theater last week. She had to construct a Greek mask and we listened to a very interesting podcast as part of her homework.
Gregory Roper, a professor of literature at the University of Dallas, joins the podcast to discuss medieval “mystery plays” (also called “miracle plays”). In England these plays, often grouped together in cycles spanning all of salvation history, were performed by town guilds for the festival of Corpus Christi. This tradition, which developed out of the liturgy, could be said to represent the revival of drama in Europe, and was an important influence on the Elizabethan theatre. Shakespeare referenced this tradition a number of times in his plays.
The plays, which served a partly didactic purpose, are full of theological typology, but also delightful verse, earthy humor, and a thought-provoking use of anachronism.

Mal wieder tolle Kunst!
DeleteEva as always you ‘pulled it out of the bag’ despite being so unwell. Our tree is still up and will remain until Candlemas. Please tell Flora her mask is absolutely brilliant!! Your card and Peter’s letter arrived today and I’ve spent a very enjoyable time reading the family news and his take on the world 😂. If Flora is only the person to like black tea I must remember to send coffee instead and then you can all have a share 🙂
ReplyDeleteI hope you are managing to keep warm amidst the very wintery weather in your area.
Sending love to you
San xx
Ah, thanks San! We are not sure when we take down our tree yet. I am glad you enjoyed the letter and I am glad it got to England within in about a week. No, no most people here drink black tea, but Flora is particularly fond of it! She does not like coffee so much. It is very cold here, we have frostbite warnings and probably our bathroom pipes will freeze soon.
DeletePhew! I will keep sending the tea then 🙂. Your weather situation sounds very challenging, praying that you remain frostbite free and that the bathroom pipes won’t be a huge problem xx
DeleteWe love your teas :). Peter gets up in the night to run the hot water. That helps somewhat with the freezing. We are also taking care of our friends' house. They are in London this spring. They also have the threat of freezing pipes, but theirs are in the kitchen. We just got back from their house turning on the faucet so it can drip over night. We are supposed to get some epic storm on the weekend with lots of snow in the forecast . . .
DeleteYes I’ve heard of that storm heading your way, I will keep the prayers going xx
DeleteThank you, San. We are kind of lucky, no power outages, just lots of snow, and it is very cold.
DeleteAnd the pipes are still going strong! We are also watching the pipes in the house of the professor who is in London this semester. His pipes are also still okay.
DeleteThat was a tradition in our family, Candlemas is when the tree comes down. But then, the tree was only put up on Christmas Eve.
ReplyDeleteWe have just started putting down some of the decoration.
