Die große Stille/Into Great Silence

By accident I came across the German movie Into Great Silence.  I was looking for books about life in a medieval monastery to supplement Miriam's study of the Middle Ages in our public library.  I thought the movie sounded interesting and checked it out.  Miriam and I have been watching the movie several nights now.  This is not a movie you can watch all at once (at least we cannot).  It needs to be watched in segments to fully appreciate it.  So what is it about?  You basically experience life as a Carthusian monk at the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the French Alps.  Carthusians are monks that were founded by the German St. Bruno.  They are a contemplative order and do not talk very much.  Hence, there is not much talking in the film, but it speaks for itself.  The tranquility of the film draws your attention to the buzzing of a fly, the dripping of a water drop, or the flickering of a flame.  It it interspersed with Bible verses (in German, French, and English).  The whole movie has a very calming effect and transports you to the monastery in the Alps.  I can only recommend this movie.  

Durch Zufall bin ich auf den deutschen Film Die große Stille gestoßen.  Als ich für Miriam nach Ergänzungmaterial für unsere Lektionen über das Mittelalter in dem Katalog der Bücherei gesucht habe, habe ich diesen Film gefunden und ausgeliehen.   Man kann diesen Film nicht gut an einem Stück sehen, er ist zu überwältigend.  So haben wir jetzt jeden Abend ein kleines Stück gesehen.  Dieser Film zeigt das Leben der Kartäuser in dem französischen Kloster La Grande Chartreuse.  Da die Kartäuser zu den kontemplativen Orden gehören, wird in dem Film fast nicht gesprochen.  Das führt dazu, daß man kleine Dinge, wie das Brummen einer Fliege, das Flackern einer Kerze oder einen fallenden Wassertropfen ganz anders wahrnimmt.  Der Film folgt den Mönchen in ihrem Leben, so daß man das Gefühl bekommt, selbst im Kloster zu wohnen.  Die einzelnen Szenen werden mit geschriebenen Bibelversen auf Englisch, Deutsch und Französisch vertieft.  Ich kann diesen Film nur empfehlen.
