The Good and the Bad/Gut und Schlecht

Good: I'm done teaching and done giving my final!

Bad: We got stuck in a long traffic jam caused by a semi-truck that had been jack-knifed across the high-way we were traveling on.  They road was blocked for over an hour, at one point we turned around and went back to where we were coming from, but there were no better (plowed) roads so that we had to wait for our road to clear.

Good: We got some Christmas candles for our tree.
Gut: Wir haben Christbaumkerzen kaufen können.

Bad: We don't have a tree yet.
Schlecht: Wir haben noch keinen Weihnachtsbaum.

Good: Peter managed to get our grocery shopping done early this morning.

Bad: The "check engine" light went on on his way back and the car needed to be towed.

Good: AAA

Bad: They towed the car to a car place that was open, but doesn't do car repairs, it only tells you what might be wrong.

Good: The tow truck driver brought Peter and the car back.  He found out that "cylinder three misfired."

Bad: We can't drive to church tomorrow morning and won't be able to get a tree on Monday.

No, that is not our church.
Nein, das ist nicht unsere Kirche.

Good: Some friends will pick up Charlotte and Peter for choir practice and lend me their van to drive the rest of the family to church tomorrow.

Warming up
Aufwärmen

Bad: Because of the car problems, I couldn't go to confession as planned.  Now this has to wait until after Christmas.

Temperature on Wednesday
Temperatur am Mittwoch (Fahrenheit)

Good: Flora got some cute new clothes!
Gut: Flora hat hübsche neue Kleider bekommen!

Lunch for people that didn't throw up.

Bad: We had to buy them because the car ride to buy some Christmas tree candles hadn't agreed with her.

Good: I finished all my oral exams, one student sang a wonderful piece by Strauss to me.  What a treat to have a future opera singer right in my tiny office!

No, this is not my student.
Nein, das ist nicht mein Student.

Bad: We haven't made a single Christmas present.
Schlecht: Wir haben bisher kein einziges Weihnachtsgeschenk gemacht.

Good: I baked several kinds of cookies.
Gut: Ich habe einige Plätzchensorten gebacken.

Christmas chocolate
Weihnachtsschokolade

Bad: I'm still grading exams.
Schlecht: Ich korrigiere immer noch Klausuren.

Good: One other student, a future illustrator, brought his artwork to the oral exam and explained the colors in detail to me, all in German.

I don't post pictures of my college students so you have to look at my "house" students.

Bad: Our house is not ready for Christmas!

Good: Julius loves it this way.
Gut: Julius mag es so.

Bad: We haven't finished our annual Christmas letter.
Schlecht: Unser Weihnachtsrundbrief ist nicht fertig.

Good: The English version is almost done.
Gut: Die englische Fassung ist fast fertig.

Bad: We cannot find two library books and might have to replace them.

Good: Charlotte (pointe), Flora, and Miriam did a good job during the second half of ballet observation week.

Charlotte

Miriam

Charlotte is the assistant teacher in Miriam's class.
Charlotte hilft beim Unterrichten von Miriams Klasse.

 Flora

Jonathan is assistant teacher for Flora's class.
Jonathan hilft Floras Klasse zu unterrichten.

Bad: It's late, I'm in the middle of grading, and we have a flood warning!

Good: I'll keep grading and try to upload some pictures here.

    1. Sounds like at your place, doesn't it? Thanks for the prayers, the car is running again (at least for now), and we got a tree! I will put the present for you in the mail after Christmas and do hope that it will get there maybe by January 6. Then you can pretend you are part of the orthodox church and open it on that day.

  3. It looks like you've had a lot of bad luck and some good luck mixed in between. The weather has been really awful this year, hasn't it? I hope that everything works out for Christmas and that the flood warning subsides. God bless and have a wonderful Christmas.

    1. We seem to be having similar Advents this year :). Yes, the weather has been crazy, I think you have gotten even more snow than we have. The car has been fixed (at least for now) and Peter was able to get a Christmas tree. We even managed to work on our presents for relatives, but they are not quite finished. So it will all come together, just not in time. The children are excited anyway and that is a blessing. Frohe Weihnachten, auch an Deinen Mann!

  4. The Good and The Bad! Wow-- you all have had a crazy few days.... Perhaps a little like the Holy Family a few days before Jesus' birth??? Our prayers are with your family. May what's important come together for Christmas!! Blessings

      Weiterhin frohes Vorbereiten.

  6. Oh my goodness, Eva. There's never a dull moment, is there? I'll say a prayer that the car will soon be in good working order for you. I know how much you need it. Poor Flora. You know, my girls used to lose their cookies all the time from riding in the car. I always thought it had something to do with not being able to see the horizon properly, because they were so little. The place you ate at looked very nice. I'm sorry Flora wasn't able to enjoy it as much!

The ballet pics and movies are lovely. I like how your camera can zoom in for the close up. Charlotte is doing very nice pointe work. It's good she and Jonathan can help out with their siblings' classes. Chanda helps with the younger class on Wednesdays.

Christmas is upon us, Eva! And we are not completely prepared! But that's alright. It's important to feel the joy and thankfulness in our hearts and to just do what we can. It's good you were able to get some baking in. We plan to do so tomorrow. However, Jack is doing poorly and we'll need to take him in to see the vet first.

When Morgana and Chanda see how much snow you have they will be envious! It's very beautiful by you, though with the warmer weather it may be a mess! It's supposed to get cold again, I think, by Christmas morning. I did notice you had, what looked like, some difficult driving. It's sad about the truck jack-knifing. That's always scary. I'm glad all of you reached your destinations safely.

I must wrap a few gifts now! And then get some sleep. I send you peaceful prayers and joy-filled wishes for a day of fun holiday preparations :)

  7. Liebe Eva,

Hoffentlich bekommst Du wirklich keine Grippe.

  8. Eva,

I enjoyed your stories of good and bad very much! Thank you so much for sharing despite being very busy.

We only started decorating our house yesterday, and our cats love it! They have been snoozing under the Christmas tree, in between stealing the ornaments. I am sure they think we put the tree up just for them!

I hope you have a very happy Christmas with your family! May God bless you!

    1. You are very welcome, Sue. Sometimes it simply feels good to write things like that down, it takes off the pressure.

Our cat Julius always sleeps under the tree. When he was younger, he would try to take the ornaments down, but not so much now anymore. At one point we bought some kind of spray that has a scent cats don't like. That kept him from trying to play with the ornaments.

Merry Christmas to you also and have fun decorating the house. We only decorate the living-room, so it's not so hard.

  9. Guess what, the car is working again, at least for now. They exchanged all the spark plugs and Peter was able to buy a Christmas tree. He said the car only once made a strange sound, but no "check engine" light went on.

I used to get car sick all the time and I still do. It helps to look straight ahead and not out of a side window. Also the stopping and breaking in a car can cause trouble. However, none of my children seems to have inherited motion sickness. We think that Flora actually has a stomach bug, she has not been feeling well for a while now. I seem to have something similar. Today Flora slept a lot so maybe she will be better tomorrow.

Thanks, for your kind words about the ballet. I do think that especially Jonathan's presence in Flora's class is a good idea because there are two little boys in that class. He is probably their big example.

Oh, I do hope that Jack will come around. What is the problem with him! I hope all your baking will go well. We made German Lebkuchen (kind of like ginger bread) with the real ingredients I had to special order. The children enjoyed making them and they look pretty good. I hope they will taste as good as they look.

Ha, the snow is all gone, we had a flood warning, but we didn't get flooded. This afternoon it started snowing again. So maybe, we'll get a white Christmas after all. Our church services are both tomorrow, one at 4:00 p.m. and one at midnight. So we won't have to drive on Christmas Day. The church is not so far away, hopefully the roads at midnight will be fine.

Your package came today, thanks so much. We will put it under the tree. We still have a gift here waiting to be wrapped and sent to you. It was made by a local craftsman and I thought it would be perfect for you.

Anyway, take care and all the best during these last days (or I guess now it is just hours).

  10. What a great comparison, our own Holy Family. I'm glad we are not looking for an inn, though. The car seems to be fixed for now and we got a tree. Now we just have to finish those presents for the relatives and write that Christmas letter. That will NOT happen before Christmas, but after all, Christmas tide is not just the 25th. So I do hope that most people will forgive our slowness this year.
