Tuesday Work/Dienstagsarbeit

Flora and I have gotten some kind of stomach bug and did not do much today.  Veronika, on the other hand, has been busy in her textiles class.  Her work is so pretty!

Flora und ich haben eine Magendarmgrippe und heute nicht viel machen können.  Veronika hat mir aber eben ihre Stickereien geschickt, die sie für ihr Textilseminar angefertigt hat.  Sie sind so hübsch geworden!

They also had to experiment with natural dyes.

Sie mußten auch mit Naturfarben färben.

Miriam is on her way back to New Hampshire.  Peter took her to Rochester where she caught the train to Boston.  In Boston, she will switch to a bus.  The last stretch of her journey is by car: she will get picked up at the bus stop and taken back to Thomas More.

Miriam ist auf dem Weg nach New Hampshire.  Peter hat sie heute nach Rochester gefahren, wo sie in den Zug nach Boston gestiegen ist.  Von dort aus nimmt sie den Bus und wird dann abgeholt, um zum College zurückzukommen.

Charlotte also got snow in Denver.

And Jonathan's hymnal displayed the German text of "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name."

Und in Jonathans Gesangbuch aus der Kirche stand sogar der deutsche Text von "Großer Gott wir loben dich".

Theater Class/Theaterklasse

In her online live theater class, Flora studied Greek and Medieval theater last week.  She had to construct a Greek mask and we listened to a very interesting podcast as part of her homework.

Für ihre online live Theaterklasse mußte Flora letzte Woche etwas über das Theater der Griechen und im Mittelalter lernen.  Sie mußte eine griechische Maske basteln und dann haben wir einen interessanten Podcast gehört, der Hausaufgabe war.  

Gregory Roper, a professor of literature at the University of Dallas, joins the podcast to discuss medieval “mystery plays” (also called “miracle plays”). In England these plays, often grouped together in cycles spanning all of salvation history, were performed by town guilds for the festival of Corpus Christi. This tradition, which developed out of the liturgy, could be said to represent the revival of drama in Europe, and was an important influence on the Elizabethan theatre. Shakespeare referenced this tradition a number of times in his plays.

The plays, which served a partly didactic purpose, are full of theological typology, but also delightful verse, earthy humor, and a thought-provoking use of anachronism.

Remaining Days of Christmas/Letzte Weihnachtsfeiertage

Our tree is still up.  We are lighting it tonight for the last time.  On Tuesday, Miriam will have to take the train back to New Hampshire to start her very last college semester.

Unser Baum steht noch.  Wir machen ihn heute abend zum letzten Mal an.  Am Dienstag fährt Miriam mit dem Zug zurück nach New Hampshire, weil ihr allerletztes Collegesemester anfängt.

Although we all had this really bad cold, we managed to complete some more Christmas activities.

Auch wenn wir alle krank waren, haben wir noch ein paar Weihnachts-aktivitäten gemacht.

Day 6: We not only started knitting foxes, but also watched the German movie "Die Weihnachtsgans Auguste."

Tag 6: Wir haben nicht nur angefangen, Füchse zu stricken, sondern auch den Film Die Weihnachtsgans Auguste geguckt.

On January 6, we celebrated Jonathan's birthday via video chat.  I had ordered him a supper, flowers, and cake from Whole Foods.  He only had to pick it up.

Am 6. Januar haben wir Jonathans Geburtstag mit einem Videotelefonat gefeiert.  Ich habe ihm Blumen, Abendbrot und einen Kuchen bei einem Laden in Washington bestellt, die er nur abholen mußte. 

This completes my catch-up here.  Our semester has started, and we have taught for a week.  Flora and I did some homeschooling, but not all subjects yet.  Ballet and art has started up again.  Violin lessons will resume this coming week.  It is quite cold and snowing again.

Das waren die letzten Wochen/Monate.  Unser Semester hat schon wieder angefangen.  Ich habe schon eine Woche wieder Deutsch unterrichtet.  Flora und ich haben auch wieder zusammen gelernt, aber noch nicht alle Fächer gemacht.  Ballett und Kunst haben wieder angefangen.  Geige fängt in der kommenden Woche wieder an.  Es ist sehr kalt und schneit wieder.

Colorado: Georgetown and German Christmas Market (Thanksgiving, Part 4)/Georgetown und deutscher Weihnachtsmarkt (Erntedankfest, Teil 4)

Veronika and Charlotte visited Georgetown.  It is a very cute village.

Veronika und Charlotte haben Georgetown besucht, das ein sehr hübsches Dorf ist.

Denver has quite a few Germans who have their own Christmas market.  Here the two of them are in front of a German sign wishing them a merry Christmas.

In Denver gibt es viele Deutsche, die ihren eigenen Weihnachtsmarkt haben.  Hier stehen die beiden vor einem deutschen Schild.
