While Flora was at her theater camp, the rest of us visited the New Deal Gallery yesterday.
Während Flora beim Theaterferienlager war, haben wir uns die New Deal Galerie gestern angeschaut.

That's very interesting about the TB hospital, and that the paintings are labeled "Federal Art Project." I like the one of the Long Island farm with the city a shadow in the distance. The tree with the golden leaves and the blue lake and sky is pretty. It's such a lovely blue :)
ReplyDeleteAll the paintings were supported by Roosevelts New Deal ideas. They hired artists to produce pretty paintings that would cheer up the patients. They have a huge collection there, but most of it was not on display right now because of the summer camps they are doing. I think they don't want to expose the paintings to so many children. I had to think of you and your parents when I saw the Long Island farm one. The blue in the other painting reminded me of some of the landscape paintings done by the artists in Worpswede. A very pretty and intense shade of blue. There must have been quite a few of these TB hospitals in NYS. TB must have been such a dreadful disease. My great-grandmother had it and spent some time in Davos, in Switzerland. She recovered. Thomas Mann bases his great novel "The Magic Mountain" on happenings in the TB hospital in Davos.
