Historical Explorations/Geschichtliche Entdeckungen

Another hot and beautiful late summer day.  We explored the area, looking for historical sites (but also stopping at some pretty outlooks).

First Stop:
Erster Haltepunkt:

This is the site of a Seneca village where Moses van Campen ran the gauntlet.

Second stop:
Zweiter Haltepunkt:

 Old German church and cemetery
Alte deutsche Kirche und Friedhof

Many tombstones were written in German or in German and English.  There were many German names all over.

Unfortunately, it is not safe to use right now.

 Beautiful Genesee River
Der wunderschöne Genesee Fluß

Birdwatching: Kingfisher and also a cooper's hawk!
Vogelbeobachtung: Eisvogel gesichtet und auch einen Rundschwanzsperber!

Fourth Stop:
Vierte Haltestelle:

Fifth Stop:
Fünfter Haltepunkt:

Zu Hause: Strickfieber: Die Handtasche für Lavendel muß fertig werden.

Starting the second project, a doll's hat.
Das zweite Projekt wird angefangen, eine Puppenmütze.

Lavender is watching and sporting her new purse.

  1. Flora you are a gold star knitter! Beautiful days :-). I love stopping by but it also makes me sad that I cannot provide this type of childhood/education for Pip :-(. The new head is a complete dragon. She has removed crucifixes and statues from the classrooms and the school no longer resembles a catholic school. There is no evidence of faith in that building. She has stopped all music and swimming lessons and there is an over emphasis on academic achievement and targets.

    1. Thanks, San. She bought herself some more yarn today when we visited the Waldorf school. Is there no other school Pip could attend? To be honest, I would pull her out of that school and find a different one. You do not need to homeschool, but there must be some other options. What do the other parents think?

    2. There is a school info evening on Wednesday. A lot of parents are unhappy but I doubt she will listen. She has been brought in to improve the school's league tables and standing with the education dept. Sad to say this type of obsession with targets is endemic throughout the UK.

We have had a really rough weekend. Pip has been whining, shouting and really badly behaved. I am struggling with my health and finding every day things so hard.

    3. I do hope that the parents will speak up! Is there no church office you can complain to? If a principal removes statues and crosses, I don't think the church should be too thrilled.

I hope you will be feeling better soon. Sending you hugs!

  2. So the first stop was across the river from Houghton where there was once a council house that belonged to the Seneca Nation but was moved to an estate and then moved to Mary Jemison's gravesite? I think i got that right . . but Mary Jemison's gravesite is not near here . . it's further away . . I think it's exciting to be living in beautiful Seneca country! Where is the reservation now?

What interesting old gravestones at the second stop :) and a lovely church. Everything was so different from their homeland for the German settlers. It is very beautiful. I love the pic of the lonesome country road almost swallowed up by the vegetation on either side!

Very exciting bird sightings! How far is Rushford Lake from you? No one was swimming? I guess everyone is back at school?! That was a beautiful big old oak tree!

Lavender's purse is gorgeous! Flora is doing so well!

    1. Not quite :). Yes, this is across the Genesee River and used to be a huge Seneca settlement. The Council House is now in Letchworth Park. Mary Jemison used to be buried in Buffalo, but the cemetery where she was was closed and they moved her remains to Letchworth Park as well, close to the Council House.

There is a small reservation down in Cuba. There are bigger ones in different counties, closer to Buffalo, and in the south-eastern parts of NYS.

Yes, these Germans all came from the same area, but I do not remember from where. I should try to find it in my books. Yes, that area is very beautiful.

It is about 15 minutes from here. The beach has closed for the season. That tree was beautiful!

Yes, thanks to Morgana, Flora is loving her new skill. She bought herself some new yarn at the Waldorf school today.
