Summer/Sommer

Such a beautiful first day of summer!  We were supposed to have heavy thunderstorms all day long, but nothing came of it.  We went for a walk, but I did not take my camera along.  The girls just finished preparing food for the fairies.  It is almost 9:00 p.m., but still quite light outside.

Peter went to Mass in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and lit a candle for us.  He also went to another church later on, just to take a look at the church, and lit a second candle for us.  We tried to skype today, but it did not work at all.  So we just send e-mails with pictures.

And Peter never forgets to send me a recording of a singing blackbird, a bird that does not exist in the U.S.  I do miss the song very much.

P.S. Of course something had to break while Peter is gone: Now our dishwasher is not working anymore.

  1. i am sorry to hear about your dishwasher!! i really like my dishwasher and when it broke a few years ago, i was not a happy camper! we tried fixing it once but then when it broke again (i think it lasted another year) we ended up getting a new one . . the same model. i'm happy with it. it does it's job :)

the singing blackbird and the bells of st. stephan's are just lovely! how nice that he sends you the recording. i would miss the chickadees and cardinals and the red winged blackbirds if they weren't around. they're my favorites. oh, and the mockingbirds. i love them. they are happy city birds.

we wish you a happy solstice! it's so nice to see the fairy food and your girls' smiling faces. happy happy summer. i'm glad you had a beautiful day. it was sunny here too, but very sticky . . a typical nyc summer day!

    1. It is too bad that it broke, we have not done anything about it. What model do you have? We have some Kenmore model. It was here when we moved in.

Would you miss those birds because of their song or their looks? There are some birds I miss because I really like the way they look, but I do think that no other bird sings as nicely as the blackbird. Although the mocking birds in California were very fine singers as well. And then there is a bird here in our backyard that sings beautifully, but I cannot remember its name right now. I have to check with Jonathan.

We are also wishing you a happy summer! You have a birthday coming up. I better get that present in the mail. It is right here on my desk.

    2. Hello Eva, I usually like birds because of their song. It's always very difficult for me to see them! But I do know what all the ones whose song I enjoy look like. Please ask Jonathan about the bird in your yard whose song you enjoy. I'm just very curious :)

Thank you for my birthday wishes. I think we will be at the German church and another ballet!!

    3. P.S. It's so chilly right now . . 63 degrees and we have the rain you had earlier. I have goosebumps as I'm only in my summer pjs and really need to crawl under some blankets . . or find a sweater!

    5. Right now it is 56, not much warmer and so dark and cloudy. We are using our down comforter. That is what you need with your summer pjs.

    6. It is a catbird! Ours sings beautifully. Have fun at the German church. Maybe you will meet some interesting people. There are quite a few Germans in NY.

  2. All the kids are looking so much older! I love their fairy feasts!

We have blackbirds that visit us frequently and it is lovely to hear their song no wonder you miss it.

It looks like Peter is appreciating his surroundings and finding time to explore the architecture in between working. Typical something breaking whilst he is away, so I guess the kids are roped in on washing up duty? Have you finished teaching your course at the college?

    Happy Summer to you

    1. They do, don't the? You know, the first morning I woke up in London 12 years ago, I heard a blackbird singing. I was almost in tears and I knew, yes you are indeed in Europe.

Peter did try to see as much as possible in Bamberg and then also in Vienna and Trumau. He would have liked to stay longer. I still have tons of pictures he took and send me.

Yes, all the children help with washing and drying dishes.

Oh, the semester ended early May. I have been done for a while.

      Happy summer to you also.
