Saturday Pictures/Samstagsbilder

While Peter was giving his paper, I packed and then we went for a short walk to the beach.  It was quite cold.

These flowers were all over the beach, but I do not know what they are called.

Our motel, the very first Motel 6 in the country.  It was named Motel 6 because a room used to cost just $6.00 a night!

Freshly pressed orange juice from oranges close by.  We saw it being pressed.
Frisch gepreßter Orangensaft aus der Gegend.  Wir haben zugesehen, wie er gepreßt wurde.

We loaded the car and drove to Carpinteria.  Lunch at Nutbelly followed.  The food was good, just way too expensive.

We drove all the way up to Thomas Aquinas College.  Jonathan was waiting for us.  His feet were tired from so much dancing (waltz and swing dance).  They danced until almost midnight!  He showed us around a bit and we had dinner at the cafeteria.

A sign like this looks so unreal in California!

  2. Oh my . . the California coast is just so beautiful!

I believe the flower is a Hottentot Fig flower (it's non-native).

Well, that's got to be the nicest Motel Six! I never realized it began in Santa Barbara. $6. Well that's just . . that's just . . making me speechless :)

I'm impressed with Thomas Aquinas, and it sounds like Jonathan had a good time.

    1. What a funny name, Hottentot Fig Flower. I just looked it up and it does look right. I wonder who brought it to Santa Barbara. It was all along the beach and it did not look planted.

It was fairly nice, not fancy (no coffeemaker, no hair dryer, etc.), but clean and inviting. You could also open the windows all the way! I hate those hotels/motels where you cannot open them. I was also surprised to read that this was the first Motel 6 and that the 6 stands for $6.00. Imagine, $6.00 for one night.

I think Jonathan had a good time, he thought it was a good college, the students were very smart, he said. He is not so sure if it is the right place for him because he is afraid that he would not enjoy all the readings. He is really interested in Theology and Political Science. Thomas Aquinas has a lot of philosophy readings, he thought too much for his taste. He went to Confession and to daily Mass and enjoyed that. He also really enjoyed the beauty of the place. It was interesting to watch the students. For class, eating, and church the students had to wear slacks/collared shirts (men) and skirts with a blouse or dresses (women). That made a huge difference! When we dropped him off, it was still class time, so everybody looked nice (not dressed up, just nice). When we picked him up, many had changed into their weekend clothes, normal clothes, not jeans with holes, etc., but they did look nicer before. Kind of funny what a difference that can make.

Peter just called, he is almost home and I still have to come up with a vocab quiz for my students to post it on Moodle. I have a Skype session tomorrow and Jonathan and Charlotte have Latin class.

    2. Good observations about the college. I remember seeing young elementary school students in Brooklyn in uniforms and they did look very nice. I also see local students here going to the neighborhood Catholic school in their uniforms. The girls will sometimes wear only knee socks with their skirts in the very cold weather!

I think I would enjoy the readings and the Philosophy classes :) It's so great that he really got to spend time there to find out what it's like. It does sound like a special place. I also like how small the student body is.

What college will he look at next! :)

Good luck with your German students!

(OH! We also like windows that open in motels! It's really very disconcerting when they don't! Morgana actually babysat for a family on the upper west side in one of the new Trump buildings where the windows did not open! It was all central air!)

    3. I think we talked about those Catholic school uniforms before and how crazy it was that they don't wear any tights.

I also like philosophy and Jonathan does too, but he does not like so many books that focus only on philosophy. There are two other Great Books places that are different we have been thinking about (The Thomas More College in NH and Wyoming Catholic College). There is also Benedictine College in KS, St. Vincent College in PA, Catholic University in DC, Notre Dame, Georgetown in DC, maybe Villanova, Christendom in VA, and a few others. I don't think there is any other college here in CA we want to see. He really wants to do Catholic theology and not just religious studies. That brings down the choices. Many supposedly Catholic places do not offer theology anymore. And not all colleges offer political science. He will not go to college next year, he is not finished with high school. All our travels have caused us to be behind.

The Trump buildings should be forbidden if they don't have windows. Cannot be healthy at all.
