Whales/Wale

Yes, we saw whales, but not just whales, but the Pacific, a new church, a new pizza place, and a chapel by Frank Lloyd Wright Jr..  But maybe I should start from the beginning.

We chose a church that was on the way to the coast: Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Habra.  The church had a beautiful stained glass window.  We even were able to receive the blessing of the throats for St. Blaise Day.

We then used some coupons to get (almost) free pizza at a new pizza place.

Afterwards we drove towards the coast.  First we saw a blimp, and then we saw the L.A. Harbor.

And then there was the sea!  Und dann das Meer!

Our destination was the Wayfarers Chapel.  It was built by the son of Frank Lloyd Wright, who has the same name as his father.  It honors Emanuel Swedenborg.  It is a very "organic" building.  The birds and squirrels can be watched through the church windows.  There is lots of light.

The lady in the visitor's center told us that it was a good time to watch whales.  So after touring the chapel and the grounds, we set off to look for some whales at the Point Vincente Interpretive Center.  Here is a chart with how many whales had been seen up to the time we got there.  Most of the whales you get to see are gray whales.  They were quite close to the coast.  You could see them coming up for breathing.  It was so exiting to scan the water for them.  I did not manage to get a picture of them because you never knew where they would surface, but we did see them!

I think the picture of a palm and a lighthouse together is just so unreal.

Yesterday they had sighted 37 gay whales for the day when we arrived.

Believe me, the whales are out there!

Our last adventure for the day was putting our feet into the ocean.  After all, how can you get so close and not do that.  It was not easy to find access to the water, though.  The coast is quite steep and dangerous.  There are not many public places you can find that allows people to reach the water.  And you do have to hike/climb to get down.  We even saw a place where somebody must have found his or her death falling over the cliffs.  But we did find a path that led down to the water and followed it.  By the time we reached the bottom, the sun started to set.  There was a high surf yesterday and swimming had been discouraged ( I had checked the weather forecast in the morning).  We had not planned on going swimming anyway because the water is really cold.  But we did put our feet into the water and were amazed at the roaring of the waves.

    1. So true, that song. We used to sing it when I was an exchange student in Canada during our exchange student meetings with over 100 students. I knew there were whales along the B.C.coast, but not down here. So we were very exited not just to see the ocean, but also some ocean wildlife. There were also interesting birds, but I would have to ask Jonathan what they were. And the church was such a little gem in the middle of those trees with a splendid view.
