17

Last time we talked to Father J. he had called Jonathan "a fine young man." Now yesterday this child of mine turned 17!  Happy Birthday!

Mein Ältester ist gestern 17 Jahre alt geworden!  Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag!

He asked for Vanillekipferl for his birthday because I did not manage to bake them for Christmas.

We lit our Christmas tree for the last time and also started Es zogen drei Könige, one of our favorite books for Epiphany.

    1. Jonathan says thank you. We were looking at old pictures from our old church the other day, when Jonathan was about 11. He had really grown since then and you are right, this blog captures his growing up.

  3. Wow, happy belated birthday to your lovely boy! It is funny how one watches children grow up on a blog and feels an attachment and interest - what a special, accomplished young man J is indeed

    1. Thank you, Lucy! This is so true, even if you have not met a person in real life, you kind of feel you know the person a bit and are part of his or her life. I feel the same.

  6. Happy Birthday Jonathan and Eva! There is so much going on for all of you. Birthdays and holidays :) I agree with Father J :) And it has been a pleasure to see Jonathan grow so handsomely on your blog. The cookies look very good! Maybe I should try to make them one day :) xoxo Love from us all!

    1. Thanks so much, Dorina, for the good wishes and nice comments. I wish we could have seen Father J. one more time, especially since Jonathan kept telling me we really had to go see him. Maybe he knew that there was not much time left, but I kept putting it off because of the bad weather and the long drive. He was very fond of Father.

When packing our swim suits today, I found Jonathan's very first one which is tiny. I took him to the outdoor pool of the apartment complex where we were living back in Indiana. I think he was about six months old when I took him for the first time. He was not afraid, but now he is not fond of swimming and afraid of the ocean and waves. I guess I should have gone more regularly, but there was no good opportunity to do that where we lived.

These cookies are really good. Give them a try. You do need lots of butter, though.
