Profit

The lemonade stand was a big success.  Veronika and Miriam made a profit and were very happy about that, but also about their experience.  They had the perfect spot, right across the fire hall where people lined up to buy barbecued chicken.  It was a hot day (we all got a sunburn), so everybody wanted some ice cold lemonade.

They decorated their table with black-eyed Susans and real lemons and served the lemonade in very cute owl cups.

Ice cubes from a local company

Miriam and Veronika did most of the selling, but both took turns with Flora so they could go and explore the flea market.

One lady gave Flora this cat.

Lemonade Stand Preparation/Limonadenstandvorbereitung

After a wonderful afternoon with 11 happy children playing outside and inside here at our house, Miriam and Veronika went to work.  Tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock they want to sell lemonade.

Really? Wirklich?

Is summer really over?  The calendar is shouting "Back to school!" and all of a sudden you realize, yes, fall is coming and the semester and new school year are about to start.  I still don't believe it, but when all of a sudden you receive lots of e-mails from the college all about what this year's course syllabus needs to contain (crazy new regulations!) and the first meetings are happening with students and colleagues, then you know that you really have to start thinking about what next Monday will bring.  And when you start thinking about that you feel like this:

And you wish you could fly away like this pig:

Where did the summer go?  I know, I spent most of it preparing for surgery, having surgery, and recovering from it (and I am not quite done with the latter). And if you take a closer look at nature, there are the first signs of summer coming to an end (not that we really had a warm summer this year).

So you remember that two children need new ballet slippers and one needs a new leotard.  You yourself really have to go and see Cheryl, your wonderful hair stylist.  There are some school supplies that also have to materialize somehow.  And a few of your children are planning to sell lemonade at the local flea market on Saturday.  So I guess you need to buy some ingredients for that as well.  That means it is time to take a one hour road trip out of your cozy country life and venture into the big city.

In the city there are some flowers and also some cozy cafes with Italian soda and coffee.

These Cafes have very interesting and artistic decorations.

They even have armchairs to rest sprained ankles.

The rest of the week is already all planned:

Thursday: Clean-up day at home and a meeting with my future teaching assistant.  I also need to take a look at some French materials my French colleague put into my office on campus (yes, we language people have access to each other's offices).
Friday: Friends from church (mom and six children) are coming for an afternoon of play.
Saturday: Flea market and lemonade stand; registration for the new ballet season
Sunday: Peter is playing the organ in church, so we have to leave early.
Monday. First day of classes for the college and us!  I guess I have to have my syllabus ready by then . . .

Is this really true?  I guess so.
Stimmt das wirkich?  Ich glaube schon.

Sprained Ankle/Verstauchter Fuß

Poor Veronika sprained her ankle while going for an early morning walk with Charlotte and Miriam.

So she could not go with Peter, Charlotte, and Miriam this morning at 5:00 a.m. to watch Jupiter and Venus before sunrise.

The lower planet is Venus, the higher one Jupiter.
Der niedrigere Planet is Venus, darüber ist Jupiter.

Charlotte took some pictures of the planets.  Charlotte hat die Planeten fotografiert.

Just look very carefully, you can still see them!

Student Planners/Aufgabenhefte

So how do my children know what independent work they have to do?  For my high schoolers I have detailed lesson plans from MODGSeton Homeschool, Kolbe, and OLVS.  I also have several books/materials where I come up with my own lesson plans.  I am trying something new this coming school year: Jonathan and Charlotte will be responsible for planning their own week each weekend.  They have to look over the materials they need to cover in a given week and then write down when they want to do what. In order to do so I bought them each a planner from CHC.  These planners are perfect because they are so SIMPLE!  After planning the coming week they have to show me how they think they will do it.  If their planning does not work out or they have work left by the end of Friday night, they have to make it up over the weekend.  I hope that this will get them into the habit of planning their time wisely and prepare them for college.

For the younger ones I like two options.  The first one is the free planning sheet from Timberdoodle. Timberdoodle offers many interesting materials and I have always liked their catalog.  They have a wonderful, wonderful post on scheduling materials here.  In that post you find a free blank scheduling chart.  You enter the books you want to use in the top yearly chart and also enter how many weeks you want to use them for.  In addition you have to enter the number of pages.  The chart then automatically calculates how many pages the student has to read each week.  There is also a bottom chart.  Whatever you enter on top gets transferred to the weekly chart at the bottom.  Below you can see Miriam's charts.  You can either let the child decide on what days he or she does what or you can determine that in advance.  For the lower grades I tell my children when they have to do what subject and write it into a wall chart.  For the higher grades, my children can choose what they do when, as long as they get it done.

Hier sieht man Miriams Tabellen.

This goes into my binder.
Dieser Teil kommt in meine Mappe.

Each child has his or her own binder for the weekly charts.

The second system, the Scholaric planner, is very similar, but a bit more sophisticated.  It is not free, but also works very well.  Check it out here.  You can print out lessons as well.

All these planners and sheets allow the student to check off what they have finished and helps them and me to see what still needs to be done while at the same time offering a feeling of accomplishment about what has been finished.  .

Student Pages in Binder/Schülerseiten in meiner Mappe

This is another entry about my binder.  After the calendar pages and idea pages I have a section for each child.  Each child's section contains the current IHIP (Individual Homeschool Instruction Plan, mandatory in New York State).

 Jonathan

For the lower grades (1-8), I have a layout for the main lessons for the current school year.

Veronika

For the high school years I have the New York State requirements for those grades all typed out and also our choice of subjects to meet them.

Charlotte

I like to add lists of what books my high schoolers have read, what activities they are doing, etc.  You can find ideas here.

Jonathan (needs to be updated again)

Finally, I add the results of their learning style evaluation.

Next time I will show the children's planners/planning sheets.

Here are some other pictures of the day:

Flora washed her purse and also her stuffed animals, at least two of them.

She took this picture of her drying friends.

Here she wanted to show me that she had emptied her washtub and hung up her towels.
