Mushrooms/Pilze

Miriam is done with her first botany main lesson block.  We want to wait for the spring flowers to appear in order to continue.  Maybe spring will really come this way because, in spite of snowfall today, we have a flood warning until tomorrow morning.  Something different at least.  Back to botany.  One of the plants she studied was the mushroom.  To see them up close we grew our own.

Miriam hat ihre erste Botanikhauptepoche hinter sich gebracht.  Wir wollen auf die Frühlingsblumen warten, um weiterzumachen.  Vielleicht kommt der Frühling ja wirklich, weil wir bis morgen früh Überschwemmungswarnung haben, trotz Schneefalls heute.  Mal was anderes.  Aber jetzt wieder zurück zur Botanik.  Miriam hat sich u.a. mit den Pilzen beschäftigt.  Damit wir sie genauer angucken können, haben wir unsere eigenen gezüchtet.

We also looked at cheese cultures, another form of fungi.  
Wir haben uns auch Käsekulturen angesehen, die ja auch zu den Pilzen gehören.

  2. What a great mushroom site, Eva. I've never eaten an Elm Oyster mushroom. It was good? Did Miriam pick out the mushroom to grow? Or did you? I think I might choose Shitake . . but I already know what they taste like. I feel a little apprehensive about trying a different type! Suggestions? What was the flavor like for the Elm Oyster?

    1. You know, I have never cared very much for the mushrooms you get in the stores. My uncle and mother love going into the woods and finding mushrooms. They know a lot about them and I remember going with them searching for mushrooms and later eating them. So have grown up with a pretty good knowledge of them. I even ventured out on my own in Austria once with a friend looking for mushrooms in the Austrian woods. We found quite a few and I fried them in butter. They were good and I didn't poison my friend, who liked them. (In case I would have poisoned us, he might have been able to help us quickly: He was a doctor, who had just finished his degree.). So there are certain mushrooms I like, but those are the fresh ones you find in the woods. The elm oyster mushrooms taste and smell like my childhood memories. Peter thought they almost tasted like chicken. Definitely worthwhile trying I would say. Two other ones I really like are boletus edulis and the meadow mushroom.

    3. P.S. What a smart culture you come from to have the confidence and knowledge to pick mushrooms. Of course, there really weren't any "woods" near where I was growing up . . Still, Americans rely on supermarket mushrooms, and woe to a person who would dare to try and pick them! On another note, we have a man here in the city who forages all over the city for green edibles. He gives tours to anyone, and many homeschoolers have formed classes to learn from him: Wildman Steve Brill

    4. That is flattering. I do hope you will like them. Even Miriam liked them fine although she hates mushrooms.

      You know, in Europe there are mushrooms everywhere. I can't remember any walk in the woods without mushrooms or anthills. I rarely see them here.

    1. Thanks, Lucy. She really enjoyed this block. It took her years to be able to do such good work. She didn't even know how to write nice cursive until grade four. She simply couldn't tell where the letters started and where they ended. So, just wait, and I am sure you will get similar results over time.

  4. Ich finde, Pilze ist ein so interessantes Thema! Das größte Lebewesen der Welt ist ja auch ein Pilz (in Oregon). Diese Pilzzuchtpackung ist super! Große Komplimente für die schönen Heftseiten, sehr fein und einladend gestaltet.

    1. Weißt Du, als ich in Oregon war, habe ich diesen nie gesehen. Falls ich nochmal dahin komme, muß ich unbedingt gucken. Ja, die Packung war so einfach und hat so gut geklappt. Erstaunlich,was es so alles gibt. Danke für Deine netten Worte zu den Heftseiten. Miriam ist ganz stolz auf ihr Werk.

    1. Ich habe so etwas auch noch nie in Europa gesehen, aber wer weiß, vielleicht gibt es ja irgendwo auch so eine Idee. Danke für die netten Worte.
