Blessing of the Animals/Tiersegen

Today, on the Feast of St. Francis, we took Julius to Father D. to have him blessed.  Jonathan, Flora, and Veronika came along, but Charlotte and Miriam were at ballet.  We used to go to this blessing in our old parish, but this was the first time with Father D.

Some other events of the day: Peter left at 7:00 a.m. for a conference, we did some cleaning before starting our homeschooling day, the mother of Miriam's friend came by and brought us a huge box of Pamela's chocolate chip cookies (to help feed her daughter every Tuesday and Thursday so that I don't have to bake all the time -- for today I had made chocolate-date-almond balls), and later Flora got sick.  She had been feeling bad all day long, but on our way home from the blessing she got sick in the car all over Julius' cat carrier.  Luckily we didn't have to give him another bath, by the way, the solution we used on his skunk adventure worked wonderfully,  but Flora needed one and so did the car/car seat.  So here I was, a sick child, half an hour away from a meeting with my students and without a husband to help out.  All my other children came to the rescue, Charlotte ran to campus to tell Miriam to come home.  You see, after ballet, Miriam had gone onto campus because I had told her I would meet her there, feed her, Veronika, and Flora supper, while I did a review session with my students.  Jonathan and Charlotte were supposed to be at ballet then.  The poor girl was waiting in front of my office wondering why I wasn't coming.  Jonathan took my German book and while I was putting Flora into the bathtub, I gave him a quick lecture on possessive pronouns, personal pronouns, and some other delicacies of German grammar.  He then left with the book to take my place during the review session.  Charlotte had stayed on campus to join him in this endeavor.  They both did a great job, most students just picked up their graded homework and didn't have any more questions, only one stayed for an hour and they helped him with all what he needed to know.  At home, Veronika and Miriam washed the cat carrier, while I took care of Flora, the car, and the car seat.  Now Flora is asleep and I do hope she will be feeling better tomorrow morning.  Why do things like this only seem to happen when Peter is gone?

Was macht man in einer solchen Situation?

  1. Eva,

I'm sorry to hear Flora is unwell. I hope she recovers quickly.

Does Julius travel well in the cat carrier? I wonder if he likes travelling by car. Our cats make a huge fuss every time we take them anywhere by car. I think Julius must be a far less fussy cat than ours!

    1. We have never taken him longer than 15-20 minutes in it. He never says anything, but I think he is happy when he can get out. He is a very calm get most of the times, but does love to hunt.

  4. I hope Flora is feeling better and that no one else has succumbed to any potential bug. Your kids are absolute stars!!! Well done to them all for helping out during a crisis, I am in awe.

    Much Love

    1. Nobody caught it, I was so relieved. With Peter gone and a stomach bug plus teaching, that would have been too much. They truly were wonderful. Quite often I have to scold them, but in emergencies we all work together and are happy to help each other out.

  5. Beautiful team work blessing each other! Thank you for sharing your crazy day and how it worked out. We have days where way too many things happen at once-- they tend to try my patience:) I hope flora feels better soon and no one else feels bad. Take care, Barbara

    1. Flora feels better, nobody else got sick, and I'm glad this episode of single, working mom is over. (We will have two more occasions to practice that in the next months, though). I'm not a patient person, so this is quite difficult for me. But we managed. Thanks for you blessings.

i'm growing very weary of the humidity here in the city. i expected it to get warm in september and/or october, but i do crave the cool crispness of a traditional autumn . . it's been rather warm by you also, hasn't it? it had been so cool by you . . i know you wrote that your goldenrod is finished . . have a good week. love to all of you :)

    1. She is much better. I had to clean the cat carrier and also had to take apart Flora's car seat and clean around her seat. That took a while and her car seat cover is still drying. I guess it should be dry by now, but these covers dry very slowly.

It is so weird, the weather, I mean. It doesn't feel right, No leaves, but so hot. Peter had snow in Denver and I told him on the phone that we were all sweating and thinking about getting the fans out. I again. I did find one goldenrod in bloom the other day. I was very surprised to see it. I had to think of you the other day when they cut down the crabapple tree across the street because a house got sold and the new owner didn't like tree. That was so sad. It always had so pretty blossoms in the spring. Didn't they cut down a tree in your courtyard a while back? I don't remember what kind it was, though.

    2. It's always so sad when people don't like trees! Crabapples are especially beautiful. Yes, they cut down two beautiful mulberry trees.
