Astronomy/Astronomie

Charlotte and I have studied the major constellations and the corresponding myths.  Here are a few pages from Charlotte's main lesson book.  For the first time, I have bought a main lesson book with alternating white and blue pages.  They were hard to photograph, but we do like the way they look.  Of course, we also go and watch the night sky and really like the book Starwatch for doing so.  It has a very good monthly guide on what to watch for.

What else?  Miriam has started her main lesson block on Norse Myths.  Due to our travels earlier this year, we didn't get to do those myths and started them now.  Veronika has started a block on saints.  Flora is doing some crafts with me and is enjoying a circle game where we harvest wheat, thresh it, and finally bake a bread with it.  Jonathan is working on various book reports and other longer essays he has to write.  One is about the Babylonian captivity of the papacy.  My German students are learning all about German word order, the nominative case, tongue twisters, plurals of nouns, and we have started to learn the German "Our Father" by heart.  Tomorrow is la table française for Jonathan and Charlotte again, while I'm meeting with a student.  I'm also practicing my French with professor J.L. (the same who does the French table) because he greets me every morning before I teach in French and asks me many questions in French.  Our departmental e-mail exchange is a mix of German, English, and French (he is trying to improve his German).  Maybe soon the Spanish professor will offer to teach me Spanish.  Sometimes, my head is just a big "soup" of German, French, and English in the mornings, and Latin, Biblical Greek, German, French, Latin, and English in the afternoons (depending on what I'm studying at home with my own children).  One of these days I will speak Greek to my students, French to my children, and Latin to my husband :).

Was sonst noch?

    1. Thanks, San, Flora wants to watch the video every day. She seems to be fascinated by it. I thought it was so true for many homeschooling families or many families with several young children.

  2. Ha! This is great and so true! I love it! A question: do your children study math and other core subjects everyday in addition to their main lesson block? And how long are your lesson blocks? Thanks! Enjoy, Barbara

    1. They do English and math everyday and also most of the foreign languages. All the other subjects I tend to rotate through our main lessons although I have had years where we did geography and science more traditionally, several times a week. In high school I still do main lessons, but that is more informal: reading and discussions in various subjects. Right now I'm doing a main lesson on muscles, bones, and digestion with Jonathan and Charlotte, but we are not doing any main lesson books so far with that. My lesson blocks are about 3-4 weeks long, each day about 90 minutes, less in the lower grades. So we do one block of astronomy, then do a block of history, and later come back to astronomy again. I also do some main lesson work for math and English in addition to the daily work in those subjects. Does that make sense?

I'm still working on a post about our schedule :).

  4. Thank you for sharing how you do your main lesson books and core subjects. We approach it somewhat similarly. Out of time necessity, we end up doing unit blocks sometimes-- even when I would rather not. That's okay! Your daughter's astronomy drawing are exquisite! Beautiful work. Thank you!-- Barbara

    1. Hello Barbara,

Why don't you like the unit blocks? Do your children like them? Thanks for your kind words.
