Adventures Continue/Die Abenteuer gehen weiter

What has happened since my last blog entry?  Let's see if I can bring you up to date quickly because I don't know how long I'll be able to write tonight.  Peter, Jonathan, Charlotte, and the students are out and about tonight, looking at Vienna by night and visiting the MAK.  In case you are wondering why they are doing that at night, here is the reason: admission is free!!  When they get back, Peter will need this laptop again :).

We've had some more wonderful days.  We watched a tightrope walker walking from steeple to steeple on the St. Stephen's Cathedral.  We actually got to see him getting ready for the walk because we happened to be up in the steeple: we were climbing the 343 stairs to get a good evening view of the city.  We all went up (and down) except Peter and Flora.  That was not a walk for small children.

Can you see the tight-rope walker's rope?

We also toured the catacombs of St. Stephen's: More than 11,000 bones are down there, most of them from people who died during the plague.  At one point the stench of the rotting corpses was so bad that the church had to be closed.  It was kind of spooky to be down there at night.  You can see the metal coffins of the intestines of the Habsburg family and a few other graves, but the rest is more or less bones piled upon bones.

We toured the Belvedere Palace, but pictures were not allowed inside.  Take a look here to get a glimpse inside.  We were there mainly for the art, but the building is also impressive.  In the medieval exhibition we saw many statues of Mary.  They made such an impression on Flora that she immediately knelt down, made the sign of the cross, and said a "Hail Mary": so sweet!!  I wish I could have taken a picture.

Another palace we visited was the Albertina.  Most museums offer wonderful worksheets for children so that the young as well as the old can enjoy their visit.  Even Jonathan and Charlotte still like these, but our children are also just happy to look at the paintings.  Especially Veronika truly enjoys this.  With Jonathan I toured the modern art section of the building all alone, pointing out many of the important painters, styles, and changes in what art meant.  This exhibition was perfect for somebody who is just learning about this time period.  It has many fine paintings from people like Monet, Picasso, Klee, Brancusi, Magritte, Feininger, Braque, etc.  I've always had a special interest for this time period and have taken classes in school and college on this kind of art.  It was so thrilling to share what I know with my son.

For church we went to the Augustinerkirche with the students.  They always have great music for Mass. We heard the Spatzenmesse (Sparrow Mass) from Mozart.  After Mass we got to see the hearts of the Habsburgs, buried in the Loreto chapel.  We also got to chat with Father Matthias, who loved Flora's Wasi (her cat) and chihuahua.  He wanted to know if they had behaved well and if they would like to come home with him.  Flora was not afraid and answered him nicely.

Back outside we passed the stables of the Spanish Riding School.  Quite fancy, I have to admit.

Ganz schön schick, muß man schon sagen.

The same day we also met a German couple who had been at the Albertina as well.  They had watched Veronika looking at the paintings and were amazed about how much interest she had.  They were very impressed with our family and we chatted for about half an hour (way past the closing time of the Albertina, so that they finally, politely, kicked us out.).  As a farewell gift they gave us 100 euros to spend on some nice food for the family.  That was such a surprise and we felt kind of embarrassed.  Nevertheless, it enabled us to go out for dinner with the family and celebrate our 17th American wedding anniversary.  We hadn't had any lunch that day (except a few peanuts and some fruit), and it was after 6.00 p.m.,so  needless to say, we were all really hungry.  What a surprise gift!  I keep telling Peter that pretty soon we will find ourselves in one of the newspapers around here as the new von Trapp family.  We just have to start singing I suppose.

When we get worn out from so much sightseeing, we like to visit some of the many parks around here.  We live very close to the Danube and can watch some amazing herons here.

For Art Deco lovers there is so much to discover, including of course Klimt's "Kiss" (yes, I gave Peter a kiss in front of the painting) and many buildings all over the city.

Secession

And now I wish everybody a belated happy Memorial Day.  We celebrated with all the students and a Wesleyan missionary couple here in one of the suburbs of Vienna.  We had a barbecue with them and they shared what they are doing here in Austria and Eastern Europe.

I do have to mention one last thing: The other day, Peter ran into an opera singer who used to be a music professor at our college.  She had taken another job in Florida, but was also here in Vienna teaching students.  What a small world this is.

And the students are terrific.  They love Flora.  Yesterday, one of the students carried her to the tram station because she was too tired to walk (we hadn't taken the stroller for that trip).  One student talked a lot with Jonathan during the Memorial Day party, there are quite a few homeschooled students among the group, one actually used to be part of our local homeschooling group, but is a college student now.  Some of the students are quite young, one is only 17, just a bit older than Jonathan, so Jonathan and Charlotte fit right in.  What a great experience for them!

  1. Hello Eva, What a wonderful visit you are having! I'm so glad you are posting about it. I can't wait to show Morgana and Chanda the pics of the Spanish Riding School! Have you ever read Eva Ibbotson's _The Star of Kazan?!_ It's one of our favorite books. It's also wonderful to see pictures of Stephenskirche and the tightrope walker. Very exciting! I was in Vienna many, many years ago and the Albertina was one of my favorite places! So glad you got to visit! It really made an impression on me.

I'm glad you are making an impression on Vienna! You are a special family so it is apropos ;) !!! Happy Anniversary and it's very good luck to kiss in front of Klimt's Kiss!

    1. No, I haven't read it. Maybe when we come back we have to check it out from our library. When you were in the Albertina, were you able to see the fancy rooms in it? I think they just recently renovated them and made them open to the public. How long did you visit Vienna?

Thanks for the anniversary good wishes. The paintings by Klimt were surrounded by many people, apparently they were among the most looked at paintings there. The colors are much more sparkling in the real pictures than on postcards. Very fascinating to see the real ones.

    1. Thanks so much, San! I always feel kind of embarrassed when people come up to us and kind of "admire" us, but I guess it makes them really happy to see a large family in this country.

    1. Thanks so much, Sara! It is a fascinating city, it does have its own problems (with immigrants from Turkey and Bosnia), but we are enjoying our time here. I wish we could stay longer to discover more.
