Crete and Troy/Kreta und Troja

Here is a picture of Charlotte's Cretan bowl, she simply painted a Cretan motif on a clay saucer.

We also read a lot about Heinrich Schliemann.  Dorothy Mills, in her book The Book of the Ancient Greeks, has a wonderful chapter on him. To learn more about the different cities of Troy check out this website.  You can actually visit the different cities and learn a lot about them.  You can also visit the sites of the Trojan War.

The Book of the Ancient Greeks.

It was so much warmer today, I ran some errands and walked part of the way.  It was almost like spring, but very foggy!  Charlotte said she really liked this kind of weather.  Tomorrow is Miriam's birthday, she'll be 10 years old, then there will be only two left under 10.  Time surely does fly.  I still have to bake and decorate chocolate hedgehogs for her.

For handwork we did something different today.  Normally I read a book to the working children to prevent them from just talking and not concentrating on their knitting, sewing, etc.  But today I did some of my mending while Miriam started a stitch sampler and Veronika was knitting away on her horse.  After ballet, Charlotte also joined us with knitting her socks.  Flora sat with us and pretended she was also doing handwork.  All of a sudden she exclaimed, "Daddy, look, five women are doing handwork."  (Jonathan was supposed to join us, but he had to finish a science experiment).  What a sweet observation!

charlotte's bowl looks very good! did you use a poster board paint, or an acrylic paint? i know chanda would enjoy doing such a project. she quickly grows weary of writing. you're very good at finding different activities for charlotte. we have enjoyed the dorothy mills book also, but i hadn't heard about the websites. thanks for posting about them. we'll enjoy taking a look.

flora is so sweet! i like to think about all of you sitting with your handwork . . on such a warm day! we've been having warm weather also. the coldest it got here was 11 degrees. not like your big zero!! you must be enjoying having some warmer air.

    1. Miriam made the hedgehogs herself this year, she also decorated them herself. We always have a problem with finding the right spines, all the ones we find are actually too big. The base is a cupcake and then you add chocolate buttercream icing. The spines are supposed to be made out of broken flaked chocolate sticks. Maybe we have to try getting the Cadbury ones. The eyes are supposed to be currants and the nose a small chocolate chip. You can find the recipe in this cookbook.

We used black soy paint from delta. We still want to glaze the plate, though. At this age, I always think that one longer composition is fine, but then I try to do more craft based activities. I do like the Dorothy Mills book, but it's definitely a book for older children. It used to be a high school book. There are so many good Greek history books out there. I really like the one by Eva Tappan and also he H.A. Guerber book.

Our temperature got up to about 60 degrees today. Tomorrow this will change again. It was nice to be able to open a window and not freeze. Even the birds were singing.
