First Sunday of Advent/Erster Advent

We had a lovely Mass in the Corpus Christi Church, a church which has been placed on the National Register of Historical Places. It used to be a church for the growing Polish immigrant population and they still offer Polish Masses. When we entered the church, we were surrounded by Polish, not one English word -- until we ran into Istvan, the musical director. He took Charlotte and Jonathan to join the other children. They had about 25 children, mostly Jonathan's and Charlotte's age. Since Jonathan and Charlotte are used to the Latin Mass they got to lead the Kyrie response! Istvan played the organ and a few people played violin. Veronika, Flora, Miriam, and I were asked to bring up the gifts. After Mass several older ladies thanked me so much for having such lovely girls who knew how to bring up the gifts and genuflect afterwards. One lady wanted to know where they go to school and I told her that they were homeschooled. Then she thanked me even more for doing such a great job -- with tears in her eyes. Now, our children are no angels and we have our rough stretches to navigate through, but it's nice to get a compliment now and then. The church has very interesting murals and the windows are from Germany. Here are a few pictures.

After Mass we had coffee and doughnuts in the parish hall. Then we drove to Wegmans, one of the best grocery store chains in the country. We love to go there, not just for shopping, but for eating! When we go places I try to cook a lunch in advance to take along. Wegmans has a great café area where you can sit and eat their food (they have an incredible food bar) or you can eat your own food. They have several microwaves to warm up food (I always take re-usable plastic plates along) and silverware. There is a kids' corner for the children to play afterwards and they have high chairs, booster, bibs, small cups, wet towels, drawing supplies, and a big sink for washing sticky fingers to make life easier for parents. It's all free!! In the bathrooms they have free diapers and wipes. There is also a supervised playroom where you can drop off smaller children while you do your grocery shopping.

In the bathrooms, they don't only have free diapers, wipes, a bench for nursing, and a changing table, but also a footstool for little people to wash their hands./In der Toilette gibt es nicht nur kostenlose Windeln, Feuchtpflegetücher, eine Bank zum Stillen und einen Wickeltisch, sondern auch einen Fußschemel für kleine Leute zum Händewaschen.

On our way back towards home we almost got caught in traffic from the Bills' football game: We didn't know that they were playing at home. Since it had been drizzling all day, some of the fans were leaving early and several roads were blocked. We still got through and managed to arrive on time at the Waldorf school for their annual Advent spiral. This year each of us was able to walk and place an apple candle. Veronika and Flora did their own candles. I guess they must be getting bigger. Some of the teachers were singing and playing recorder. It was such a calming and peaceful way to start the Advent season. Now we are back home, the little ones are in bed, Jonathan and Charlotte are on their way to bed, and I need to prepare for tomorrow! I hope you all had a wonderful first Sunday of Advent.

Waiting for the doors to the gym to open, where the Advent spiral was laid out.

  2. What a beautiful start to Advent, I watched Sarah from Bella Luna toys talk about the advent spiral celebration it sounds so special.

The church pictures are just glorious and such lovely words spoken to you from another mass attender, were you on your own with the kids or was Peter elsewhere in the church at the time? Either way those kids of yours are a real credit to you both.

Your grocery shopping experience is certainly a bloggable event. Such a fantastic store not only providing stuff for the little ones, but also the chance to bring along your own food and heat it where necessary. Wegman's deserves an award for putting the needs of families first.

Much love to you and blessings upon your week.

    1. These spirals are wonderful. I went to my first one in Germany, but with the children our first one was in North Carolina, just with Jonathan and Charlotte. We had a wonderful time there, left in the dark with all the lit candles still fresh on our minds. Because of the dark atmosphere at the spiral we hadn't noticed that outside, in the houses along the way, it was also very dark. After a while we realized that something must have been wrong: There was one of the larges power outages the Durham-Chapel Hill area had ever experienced. Some big machine had cut a major cable. It took almost the whole night for the electricity to be restored. So we had continue the candlelight even after the spiral.

No, Peter was with us, but the girls were asked to bring up the gifts. Flora wanted to go also, but only with me, so I ended up going as well.

Yes, I love Wegmans and it is in so many locations around here, even in Pennsylvania are a few stores. They also have a great selection of everything and many free samples.

Wishing you a wonderful week as well!

  5. hello eva, it's so nice to hear about your beautiful advent. i'm glad you made the spiral on time. we always like attending a spiral for advent. we missed it this year because of nutcracker rehearsal. we're finally into tech week. the first performance is thursday. i'm glad. i'll be happy to have quieter days when it's over. however, it is a big event for m and c, and two nyc ballet dancers are performing as sugar plum fairy and her cavalier (jennifer ringer and jared angle).

the corpus christi church is beautiful! and wegman's looks like fun! it's also warmly decorated, and i would say that's because they have nice german taste :) i've never been. i wish we had one around here.

i agree that it is nice to receive compliments on our children every once in awhile :) it sounds like your family's loving energy made her very happy.

    1. Thanks for your kind words. Wegmans does look very European, they also sell a lot of European food and send their employees overseas to get to know where the Emmentaler cheese comes from for example. The tables in the children's area used to be wooden. I don't know why they replaced them with plastic ones.

Wishing you a successful Nutcracker. Jonathan was once a mouse in the Nutcracker and they also had a couple from one of the Buffalo ballet dance those parts. That was very special.

    2. plastic is an invasive species!

    3. I love that sentence, "Plastic is an invasive species." Maybe you should ask the State of New York to add it to their list, next to Emerald ash borer :).
