Safe and Sound/Wohlbehalten

We got through the storm with no major damage and no power outage! Around us the power was out and our county was hit the worst in Western New York, but not our little hamlet. That was a blessing, especially for all the college students here. We did get some water in the garage, but Peter braved the winds and cleaned out all the gutters (they were plugged by fallen leaves).  That did the trick and we didn't get more water in the garage.  I do feel sorry for the eastern part of the state and along the eastern coast and am especially thinking of Dorina and her family. All schools and ballet were canceled today, but we did some lessons.

Veronika has finished the introduction to the numbers. We covered them in detail up to 12. Now we are doing a week of watercolor painting. We started with the colors blue and yellow and have done two paintings so far. They were not allowed to mix for Veronika.

Of course, Flora also wanted to use the same colors and was excited to get green!

Miriam has finished her house map (what a difficult process!) and is now working on a map of the main parts of our hamlet.

Charlotte has written a description of Zeus and also an inscription that was found on the Temple of Delphi.

Learning French with "le chat"/Französisch mit "le chat"

Jonathan is having a hard time coming up with a good continuation of a story starter from his writing textbook (Correct Writing). He doesn't like finishing stories someone else started, but he got an A on the first story he had to finish, graded by his OLVS teacher. So what he is doing can't be too bad, even though he doesn't like it and feels the need to complain a lot :-). He had another painting class today and is almost finished with his abstract painting. I haven't seen it so far. Maybe when it's done he can take a picture.

Flora has discovered that she can reach the stove well and that she loves stirring the food for dinner. Here you can see her working on a chicken stir-fry.

Tomorrow will be busy with Halloween preparations. Miriam and Veronika want to go trick-or-treating for the first time. Charlotte will probably go with them. They want to dress up as fancy ladies (those old ballet costumes come in handy). Miriam is also decorating a pumpkin a friend gave her.

Tomorrow we will carve jack-o-lanterns. The children have been singing the Jack O'Lantern song from Sing a Song of Seasons and also "Guess What?" by Sr. Gertrude Therese from the songbook Our Musical Year : Songs of Faith Freedom and Fun (Level 1).  We will go to  the Latin mass on All Saints' Day in the morning on Thursday and to a regular mass for All Souls' Day on Friday.  Before that we will have to drive to our old little church and look through the altar server vestments.  Jonathan has grown so much that his old one doesn't fit him anymore.  (He needs the traditional vestment for the Latin mass and only our old church still has them).  So I hope that there is one that will fit him, but Father D. has said if we can't find one, he will order a new one.  (His old one is so short that Father noticed it also and asked him to look for a bigger size).  On Saturday, one of Miriam's friends will come for a visit, Jonathan has a science day on campus (some of our catholic homeschooling friends will also attend and might come over afterwards), and on Sunday we are thinking about attending a special mass with the new bishop for our Catholic homeschooling group.  Those are the plans for the next days.  Happy Halloween to everybody!

    Nula

  2. I'm so relieved to know that you are all safe and well. Benedict would have had a great time drawing a map for your house! Ask him to do a water colour and he's not keen but let him loose with paper and pencil and he draws complex diagrams, maps and machines! I think he's inherited Dave's draughtmanship skills!

Sara, Benedict and Pip carved the pumpkin yesterday and we are making pumpkin toffee cookies, pumpkin pie and soul cakes for any visitors this evening.

    Love to you all

    San xx

  5. So glad to hear you all are well. I hope your evening was filled with Halloween fun. One of my girls used her old ballet stuff to dress up this year too. Since my niece was visiting I got to give her all my daughters outgrown ballet outfits ; )

    1. That's exactly what my girls did, they used their old ballet costumes! I posted pictures of their costumes yesterday.
