Siddhartha Gautama

The Prince Who Ran Away: The Story Of Gautama BuddhaBuddhaWe had to run several errands today and finish some cleaning up from the weekend.  So there wasn't so much time for main lessons, but I managed to read the story of Buddha to Charlotte.  There are also two fine picture books that are helpful to get to know the life of Siddhartha Gautama: Buddhaand The Prince Who Ran Away: The Story Of Gautama Buddha.  Another interesting book is Buddha at Bedtime: Tales of Love and Wisdom for You to Read with Your Child to Enchant, Enlighten and Inspire.  If she were older we could also read Hesse's Siddhartha, but that will have to wait.

Anne of Green GablesBuddha at Bedtime: Tales of Love and Wisdom for You to Read with Your Child to Enchant, Enlighten and InspireCharlotte and I have been watching Anne of Green Gables in the evenings.  I first watched it in Canada on TV back in 1986.  Now Jonathan wants to watch it too, but since he hasn't read the book he can't watch it right now.  (It's our family rule, first you have to read the book, then you can watch a movie).  So, guess what:  He's reading "Anne of Green Gables" without being told to read it.  (He normally only reads non-fiction in his spare time).

  4. Thank you San, this is actually a fairly new rule. We don't watch TV and until a few years ago didn't have a computer at home, so watching a movie was never an issue. Now with a computer I allow the occasional DVD, but I still want the children to form their own images of a book before getting them through a film, no matter how good the film is. It also gives them the ability to compare between the original bood and what the director of a film thought of a book. For the little ones I still don't allow any DVDs. Jonathan and Charlotte are the first ones so far. The exception to this are a few ballet DVDs.

Hast Du "Anne of Green Gables" auf Englisch gelesen?

  6. Hello Dorina, Jonathan seems to be enjoying it also; my husband did so, when he was a child. One of my dreams is to go and see Prince Edward Island myself. When I was an exchange student in BC, Canada, I also traveled to the east, but only as far as Quebec, which I liked a lot. Maybe one day I will get to go.
