Summer Break/Sommerpause

We will be taking a summer break to relax and be with friends and family.  I will return to blogging sometime around August 10.  Then I will share my plans for next school year.

A Hodgepodge of Impressions/Kunterbunte Eindrücke

We received a few more pictures of Jonathan's mission and the gallery.

Today, Jonathan read a lot about the animals of North and Central America.  He drew a few into his main lesson book.

Charlotte did a huge pile of ironing.  We also made some "Rote Grütze," a traditional German dish made mainly with cooked berries (red currants, strawberries, etc.) or some other fruit and sugar.  You serve it with cream or vanilla sauce.  Our neighbors had some black currants, and so I cooked them with sugar until they had a thick soup-like consistency.  We let them cool and served them with cream.  You can also add lemon juice, vanilla, cornstarch, and some other more exotic ingredients, but I like a plain version the best.

Mary and Mother Angelica/Maria und Mutter Angelica

Yesterday there was a tornado warning and watch for parts of our county, but the tornado moved away towards Lake Chautauqua, where it caused some damage.  We had lots of rain and thunderstorms, which lasted all morning.

Mother Angelica's Answers, Not PromisesFor our religious story we read about the Miraculous Medal in Journeys With Mary: Apparitions of Our Lady.  So again we journeyed to France, but this time to Paris.  The Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal web site has a very well done children's section.

I'm slowly working my way through Mother Angelica's Answers, Not Promises, a book I checked out from a church library.  I read about prayer today which was a nice complement to this morning's gospel, where Jesus teaches the disciples to pray the "Our Father."  We don't have TV and so I've never seen Mother Angelica on TV, but  so far I enjoy the book.

Journeys With Mary: Apparitions of Our Lady (Encounter the Saints Series, 9)Unsere religiöse Geschichte heute war über die wundertätige Medallie in dem Buch Journeys With Mary: Apparitions of Our LadyWir waren also wieder in Frankreich, aber diesmal in Paris.

Nature and Yardwork/Natur und Gartenarbeit

Lots of yard work today.  We got up early.  Jonathan and I went for an early morning walk.  We saw lots of bats, a blooming hibiscus, and an evening primrose.

While we were out walking, my husband was already busy in the yard: pulling weeds, mowing the lawn, etc.  Flora had also gotten up and went outside in her pyjamas to help.  By the way, she's learned a new German word today and is repeating it a lot: "schauderhaft."  It means "horrible."

Jonathan has decided to practice the Latin names of some birds he likes.  So today you could hear things like: Oriolus Oriolus, Pyrrhula Pyrrhula, and Apila Chrysaetos.  Do you know the English equivalents?

Erie Canal and North American Vegetation

Amazing Impossible Erie Canal (Aladdin Picture Books)Today Charlotte learned about the Erie Canal.  Our little village actually had its own canal that used to be connected to the Erie Canal.  Many towns around here sprang up because of the canal.  We read the beautiful picture book Amazing Impossible Erie CanalThen Charlotte started to draw a map with the canal into her main lesson book and marked all the important towns on the way.

Learning about the Erie Canal/Wir lernen etwas über den Erie Canal.

Jonathan looked at different vegetation zones in North and Central America.  He wrote a short description of each zone and started to draw some plants for each zone.  He spent lots of time looking at plant guide books.

Circle time outside/Kreisspiel draußen

We picked a new book for our lunchtime read aloud.  It is called Tales from Moominvalley, and I have to say that it's very strange.  The children seem to like it, though.

Picture Time: Mission and Art/Fotos: Weltraummission und Kunst

Jonathan's mission on Tuesday was organized by one of the many Challenger Learning Centers in the country.  The purpose of this activity is to bring older children together and let them fly a mission with a spaceship.  The group gets divided in different teams like medical, navigation, data, etc.  Each team has a certain list of tasks to do and has to make decisions which have an effect on the whole mission.  Things can go wrong and the mission might fail.  Jonathan was in a space station that wanted to send out a probe to intercept Halley's Comet to study its composition.  Some other children, in another room, were in the mission control center on earth.  Each room really looked like either the international space station or a mission control center.  After half the time was over, the children switched rooms so that each child got to be in each location.  At the end of the mission, each team presented what it had done, what problems it had encountered, and what it had learned.  Later we all got to tour the facility.

While Jonathan was doing this, the rest of us visited the Quick Arts Center, which is located on the campus of St. Bonaventure University.  We toured their European and Asian art collections.  Afterwards the children could paint tiles which were put together as a mosaic.

Children's Mosaic (children were 10 and under)/Mosaik der Kinder (die Kinder waren 10 und jünger)
