Cooking and Art on Friday/Kochen und Kunst am Freitag

We caught another one/Wir haben noch eine gefangen

Another week is almost over.  Jonathan has finished learning the twelve most important Greek gods.  Now we're moving to the minor ones.  Today we read about Deucalion and Pyrrha building an ark to survive a flood Zeus was going to send to destroy mankind.  There are astounding parallels to the Biblical flood, just no animals.  Charlotte started to write an essay entitled "I am" in order to practice the present tense.  She finished the one with the beginning "I remember," 
which she wrote to study the past tense.  Miriam heard a story about Minus Miner -- the introduction to subtraction.  Everybody worked in math and English books.  Jonathan and Miriam both work with the old version of Voyages in English.  It's a rigorous approach to English and they both enjoy it.  Charlotte is using Language of God for Little Folks from Catholic Heritage Curricula in combination with Essentials of English.  We also use Intermediate Language Lessons for her.  These are not less rigorous, but fit her learning style better.

On Fridays, we don't eat meat, so we had a fish chowder soup for lunch, our main meal.  I have several cookbooks I go back to often, but I use them more as inspirations for my own recipes.  I really like The Yellow Farmhouse Cook-book, Nourishing Tra-ditions, Smart Cooking, Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home, Eat Well, Feel Well, and Grain-free Gourmet.  Today we ate a fish chowder soup with sweet potatoes, peas, tilapia, cream, and apple. 

The afternoon was spent with Artistic Pursuits.  Here are the pictures the children are working on:

While I was making dinner, Charlotte, Veronika, and Flora went dancing to the German CD Ich bin der kleine Zappelmann. Jonathan and Miriam helped in the kitchen.

Wieder ist eine Woche fast zu Ende.  Jonathan hat die zwölf wichtigsten römischen Götter abgeschlossen und nun mit geringeren Göttern angefangen.  Heute hat er über Deukalion und Pyrrha gelesen, die eine Arche gebaut haben, um sich vor einer Flut zu schützen.  Zeus wollte sie schicken, um die Menschheit zu vernichten.  Es gibt erstaunliche Parallelen zum Alten Testament, nur keine Tiere.  Charlotte hat ihren Aufsatz zur Vergangenheit ("Ich erinnere mich") zu Ende geschrieben und mit einem zur Gegenwart ("Ich bin") angefangen.  Miriam hat eine Geschichte über den Bergmann "Minus Miner" gehört und so mit Subtraktion begonnen.  Alle Kinder haben auch in ihren Mathebüchern und Englischbüchern gearbeitet.  Für Miriam und Jonathan benutzen wir die alte Schulbuchserie
"Voyages in English", die sehr strukturiert und anspruchsvoll ist.  Für Charlotte benutzen wir Language of God for Little Folks, Essentials of English und Intermediate Language Lessons.  Diese Bücher verlangen auch viel, passen  aber besser zu Charlottes Lerntyp.   

Freitags essen wir kein Fleisch und so habe ich eine Fischsuppe mit Buntbarsch, Süßkartoffel, Apfel, Erbsen und Sahne gemacht.  Ich lasse mich von den oben abgebildeten Kochbüchern inspirieren und kreiere oft meine eigenen Rezepte. 

Nachmittags haben alle weiter an Artistic Pursuits Aufgaben gearbeitet.  Während ich Abendbrot gemacht habe, haben Veronika, Flora und Charlotte nach der CD Ich bin der kleine Zappelmann getanzt.  Jonathan und Miriam haben in der Küche geholfen.
